Reimagining Nonprofits and Philanthropy throughout this summer. We’re thinking deeply about our collective work in building the strengths of our community. We’re hopeful about the ways our community is participating and showing up to collaborate in addressing the challenges we face. We’re prepared to pursue extraordinary opportunities in collaboration with you.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
We believe that everyone has something to contribute and that everyone can be a leader. ACF is committed to elevating individuals who are making a positive impact as engaged citizens and professionals. This includes existing and emerging leaders, as well as adult and youth leaders.
Leaders who are members of the communities who have the experience, relationships, and knowledge essential for developing solutions with measurable, sustainable impact. Importantly, these local leaders can also recognize and leverage assets within their communities.
Recognizing the value of local leaders in Athens County has shaped ACF's approach in recent years. We have intentionally invested in the people and organizations in the county, building their leadership, supporting their initiatives, and cultivating careful partnerships that draw on their expertise. We have seen actors in the county collaborate to address complex challenges and make meaningful, swift progress.
Leadership Athens County
One way we elevate leaders in Athens County is through our Leadership Athens County programs: Flagship and Youth.
Leadership Athens County (LAC) is a place-based, asset-focused leadership program that develops a corps of informed citizens to provide dynamic community leadership. LAC brings together existing and emerging leaders to inform, connect, and inspire community-minded individuals to engage in service. LAC also helps participants develop and understand their own leadership styles.

Bridge the Gap Fund
Bridge the Gap Fund exists to keep a short-term emergency from becoming a long-term setback.
In Athens County, many organizations already provide one-on-one expert support to neighbors in need. That strong network of care is one of our community’s greatest strengths. What is often missing, however, is flexible funding to cover expenses that traditional safety-net programs cannot cover.
A group of local neighbors came together to fill that gap. The Athens County Foundation holds the fund, and a trusted nonprofit partner distributes assistance directly to households in need.
This 100% community-powered, neighbor-to-neighbor emergency fund provides flexible support for urgent needs that traditional funding often does not cover.
Since launching in April 2025, more than $69,000 has been distributed to help 85 households in Athens County facing critical challenges. That support has helped families stay housed, keep their utilities on, maintain employment, and recover from unexpected hardships.
Sometimes the most meaningful assistance begins with a simple phone call. The nonprofit that administers the fund shared the following bright spot with us.
When a guardian reached out about an unexpectedly high water bill for the woman she supports, she was understandably concerned. Living on a fixed income, the client had no financial cushion for an expense of this size, and the guardian was preparing to use her own personal funds to help cover the bill while searching for other options.
As they talked through the situation together, the cause became clearer. The client lives independently with support from in-home aides who visit twice each day. Because the client has a private bathroom that only she uses, a continuously running toilet went unnoticed for an extended period. By the time the problem was discovered after the unusually large water bill arrived, the leak had affected two months of water usage.
Working together, they contacted the local water department to determine the portion of the bill directly related to the malfunction. With that information, they were able to secure assistance to cover the unexpected cost, removing a significant financial burden from both the client and her guardian. The property owner repaired the toilet, and when they followed up a few weeks later, the guardian shared that everything had been fixed and the client was doing well.
This experience is a reminder that unexpected challenges can arise for anyone. With responsive partnerships, thoughtful problem-solving, and timely support, a temporary crisis can become an opportunity to preserve stability and help a neighbor continue living safely and independently in the community.
