There is a phrase we hear often: Money is power.

And in many ways, it is true. Wealth opens doors. It secures invitations. It brings seats at tables where decisions are made, and futures are shaped. In the philanthropic industry, proximity to wealth often determines proximity to influence.

At the Athens County Foundation, we recognize this reality.

As stewards of people’s charitable resources, we are entrusted with managing and directing wealth for community good. That stewardship places us in rooms with elected officials, nonprofit leaders, business owners, and institutional partners. It gives us access. It gives us a voice. It gives us power.

With that power comes responsibility. We do not take it lightly.

Acknowledging the Weight of Power

Philanthropy has a complex history. It has shaped systems, influenced policy, and at times reinforced inequities. We are honest about that history, and we are intentional about how we show up today.

Our mission is clear:

If everyone is engaged, then power cannot stay concentrated at a single table.

It must be shared.

We believe contributions of all kinds have value. Money matters, yes. But so does time, lived experience, relationships, professional expertise, cultural knowledge, and creative vision. When we talk about collaboration and participation, we mean it. We are working to build systems that make room for more voices, not fewer.

The Empty Chair

In our meetings, you may notice something unusual: we acknowledge, figuratively and sometimes literally, an empty chair.

It is not a mistake.

That chair symbolizes the people who should be in the room but are not. Those who have been marginalized. Those who are carrying heavy burdens. Those who are navigating systems every day that were not designed with them in mind. Those with lived experience whose insight is essential to meaningful change.

The chair reminds us that access to the table is not evenly distributed.

It also reminds us of our responsibility. Even when not every person can physically be present, those of us who are around the table must hold their interests in mind. We must invite them in when possible. We must educate ourselves. We must listen with curiosity and not judgment. We must lean on those most proximate to the challenges at hand and, when appropriate, use our position to advocate.

Participatory change making is not a slogan for us. It is a commitment.

The Blue Chair

The teal chair began as something much lighter. It started as an inside joke among our strategy development team. None of us quite recall its origins. Somewhere along the way, the image of a teal chair became shorthand for the people we were designing for and with.

And then it stuck.

We are embracing that teal chair as a symbol. It represents the voices not yet heard, the neighbors not yet connected, the leaders not yet recognized. It represents an invitation.

It represents accountability.

What It Means to Pull Up a Chair

To pull up a chair is to embrace your power as a valued member of this community.

To pull up a chair is to contribute in ways you can, through your time, your money, your talents, your skills, your relationships, your ideas.

To pull up a chair is to accept the responsibility of representation. When you sit at a decision making table, you carry the weight of those who are not there. You ask better questions. You listen more closely. You advocate more thoughtfully.

To pull up a chair is also too frtoyourself from limitations handed down by history or social institutions. It is to recognize that your perspective matters. That your lived experience is expertise. That there is something only you can contribute. And that contribution is deeply valued.

We have seen through our ripple effect mapping and years of community engagement that when people connect, mentor, collaborate, and share resources, the impact expands far beyond what anyone of us could accomplish alone. Every act matters. Every voice shapes the outcome.

Celebration of Community 2026

The Athens County Foundation’s Celebration of Community event on April 8 recognized a handful of community leaders in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. Kelly Hatas and Jessica Stroh of Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP) were awarded Woman of the Year honors. At the same time, Jim and Celeste Parsons earned the title of Seniors of the Year. The Cornwell Award honored both an individual and an organization for the first time, naming Hylie and Bruce Voss as individual recipients and Athens County Public Libraries as the organization recipient.

“Every year, this gathering reminds me why Athens County is such a special place,” said ACF executive director Kerry Pigman, adding, “The strength of this community does not come from any single organization, institution, or leader. It comes from the relationships among us.”

Pigman positioned ACF as an institution that stewards philanthropic resources, connects partners, and supports ideas that emerge from the community. “But the real leadership comes from all of you,” she said.

Hatas and Stroh named Women of the Year

Kelly Hatas serves as executive director of HAPCAP, and Jessica Stroh serves as HAPCAP’s director of community service. In addition to supporting community members through programs like the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, transit services, and Head Start, HAPCAP was central to the Housing Security Co-Create group, which secured funding to acquire the old Sunset Motel and transform it into a shelter for the unhoused in the community.

“Their leadership around the Sunset Shelter initiative makes this past year especially remarkable,” said Rose Frech of Integrated Services for Behavioral Health, who nominated the two.

“They demonstrate that strong leadership does not require being the loudest voice in the room, but rather the most thoughtful, steady, and principled.” Frech continued, “And for emerging women leaders in Athens, they model a powerful and deeply needed form of leadership rooted in humility, integrity, and service.”

The Woman of the Year award, sponsored by the ACF Women’s Fund, honors outstanding women in Athens County who exhibit a courageous voice that has been – or needs to be – recognized and who make a difference to the lives of women or girls in Athens County. The mission of the Women’s Fund is to promote philanthropy among women and to provide funding to programs and projects in Athens County that empower women to achieve their full potential. Each year, the Women’s Fund awards grants to Athens County nonprofits that benefit women and girls.

Jim and Celeste Parsons named the Seniors of the Year.

Jim and Celeste Parsons are visible to many in Athens County as the retired couple seen frequently out for rides on their tandem bicycle. To the leaders and volunteers at Stuart’s Opera House, they’re known as super volunteers.

Jennifer Fritchley, herself a volunteer at Stuart’s, introduced the award and pointed to the many hours of volunteer work that the Parsons have dedicated to the opera house, from performing to costume and set design. “Whether supporting local organizations, collaborating with fellow volunteers, mentoring emerging performers and technicians, or investing their time and resources into projects that strengthen community life, they embody engagement and generosity,” Dean said, noting that their service has not diminished with age, but only deepened. “Their example encourages other seniors to remain involved, connected, and purposeful.”

The Athens Jaycees Senior Fund through the Athens County Foundation awards the Senior of the Year annually to a senior (65 or older) who has provided key leadership in our community, especially related to issues affecting the quality of life of seniors or in the area of philanthropy.

Cornwell Award recognizes Hylie and Bruce Voss, Athens County Public Libraries.

For the first time, the Cornwell Award recognized both individual and organizational recipients. Hylie and Bruce Voss were honored for their support of Athens County through philanthropy and leadership. Hylie Voss is president of the Sugar Bush Foundation, chair of the board of Good Works, Inc., and an active participant in the Housing Co-Create initiative. Bruce Voss is a supporter of Rural Action, Passion Works Studio, and the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center.

Scott Robe, local attorney and ACF board member, introduced the Vosses. “Together, Bruce and Hylie Voss have strengthened the nonprofit ecosystem of Athens County through thoughtful engagement, collaboration, and enduring generosity, making them highly deserving of recognition.”

Hylie Voss accepted the award by describing the culture of interconnectedness among her neighbors: one gives another a ride to town, who, in turn, checks on a woman without shelter who is staying with her. Another starts a garden for a neighbor. “A culture of neighborliness is an interconnected network of relationships that creates resilience in our communities,” Voss said, “It’s barely even noticed by the formal economy, but it is how we get by.”

For the first time, the Cornwell Award was also presented to an organization, the Athens County Public Libraries. “The Athens County Public Libraries are a vital pillar of civic infrastructure in Athens County,” Robe said. “More than places to borrow books, the libraries function as trusted public institutions where residents gather, access essential resources, and connect. In a rural county where transportation, broadband, and access to services can be barriers, the library system provides free and equitable access to technology, high-speed internet, educational tools, and a welcoming public space.”

Nick Tepe, director of libraries, accepted the award. “The only way we can meet the information needs of our community today is to embed ourselves in our communities. Go to where our citizens are and find out what they need,” he said, adding, “I hope that everyone here tonight will use this as an opportunity to talk to your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and elected officials at every level about what libraries really do and why libraries matter. We can’t do what we do without your support, and this award shows us that you have our backs, too.”

The Cornwell Award was established in 1996 in honor of Foster Cornwell’s legacy of care and commitment to Athens County and to recognize those with a similar vision and dedication to Athens County.

Celebrating Civic Trust and Community Leadership in Athens County

Each year, the Celebration of Community hosted by the Athens County Foundation brings together neighbors, nonprofit leaders, donors, and partners to recognize the people who make Athens County stronger.

But the evening is about more than awards. It’s about celebrating the spirit that makes this region unique: civic trust, collaboration, and connection across our community.

When people in Athens County come together around shared purpose, meaningful change happens.

Gathering in a Place That Connects Community

This year’s celebration takes place at Stuart's Opera House , a historic cultural landmark that has served Southeast Ohio since 1879.

For nearly a century and a half, Stuart’s has been more than a performance venue. It has been a gathering place where people come together to experience music, storytelling, art, and shared community life.

Today, under the leadership of Executive Director Devin Sudman, Stuart’s continues to expand access to the arts through performances, educational programming, and partnerships across the region.

Spaces like Stuart’s remind us how important community gathering places are. They create opportunities for connection, creativity, and shared experiences—things every thriving community needs.

A Shared Commitment to Athens County’s Future

The Celebration of Community is a reminder that the future of Athens County is not built by any one person or organization.

It is built collectively.

It is built by nonprofit leaders working tirelessly to serve their neighbors.

RCIF Applications Open

We are pleased to announce that the Rocky Community Improvement Fund (RCIF) Spring 2026 grant cycle is now open. Applications will be accepted until April 19, 2026.

RCIF supports communities where Rocky Brands employees live and work, directing funding to projects in Nelsonville, Buchtel, Haydenville, Trimble, Murray City, Glouster, Carbon Hill, and surrounding areas. Since 2013, the fund has partnered with the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation to match charitable contributions from Rocky Brands employees.

Eligible applicants include organizations serving Nelsonville, nearby villages, and the broader counties of Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, and Washington. Funding priorities are as follows:

Children’s welfare and education
Hunger
School programs
Senior citizens
Developmental disabilities
Community development and infrastructure
Housing initiatives
Animal welfare
Community beautification
Environmental programs

Please note that funding is limited, with a total of $50,000 available.

We encourage interested organizations to apply early and reach out with any questions.

Thank you to Rural Action for submitting their story of reflection.

Reflection of Exploring Athens: A Journey of Connection

The day began at the shelter with introductions and an overview of the planned activities, followed by breakfast at Village Bakery. Upon request, the owners graciously donated 12 $10 gift cards to support residents as they regain confidence and comfort as they reintegrate into the community. They recognized the value of helping participants discover welcoming local resources, including the Village Bakery. The additional five gift cards were given directly to the clients for future visits.

The group then visited Kindred Market and the Athens Public Library to learn more about nearby community resources before boarding the 12:05 p.m. Athens Public Transit bus to Nelsonville. By this point, the participants had clearly connected, sharing stories, laughing, and enjoying one another’s company. On the bus ride, one client opened up about always being a “city person” who never felt comfortable in rural areas. But she went on to say, “this is exactly what I needed,” noting that the supportive group and uplifting experiences were helping her create new, positive memories in a rural community.

Upon arriving in Nelsonville, the group enjoyed lunch from Fullbrooks Café and listened to Tyler McDaniel, President of the Little Cities of Black Diamonds, discuss the region’s history of labor unionization and its influence on local communities today. Before returning to Athens, they walked around the square to identify local organizations that foster wellness and cooperative values, including the Nelsonville Public Library, New Leaf Marketplace, Jobs and Family Services, The Hive, Stuart’s, and the Athens County Foundation.

By the end of the tour, the participants chose to exchange phone numbers so they could stay connected and plan more outings together. They also requested a group photo of the four of them at the Nelsonville bus stop.

February reminds us that while spring is not far off, there are still opportunities for cozy evenings and community gatherings. As we begin a new year, the Athens County Foundation is honored to continue working with and supporting our nonprofit partners. They are essential to the strength, creativity, and care that define our community, and we are grateful for the work you do every day across Athens County to support our community.

Your contributions reflect what is possible when neighbors invest in one another. Your generosity helps provide critical lifelines, opens doors to opportunity, strengthens connections, and creates lasting impact throughout our community. From meeting immediate needs to building long-term solutions, your work helps ensure Athens County remains a place where people can thrive.

In 2022, we announced the establishment of the Athens County Racial Equity Fund (REF). This fund provides financial support to selected anti-racist educational projects and community programs, while building capacity and opportunities for People of the Global Majority in Athens County. Since its inception, the fund has supported 10 unique organizations, funding 13 projects totaling $54,170 in awards.

At Athens County Foundation, we believe lasting change happens when people pull up a chair, listen, and work together. That belief is at the heart of our Racial Equity Fund and the partners who are shaping a more just and inclusive Athens County.

The Racial Equity Fund was created to support community-led efforts that address racial inequities and expand opportunity. Through collaboration with local organizations, leaders, and residents, the Fund helps ensure that those most impacted by inequity have a voice in creating solutions.

Across the county, partners supported by the Racial Equity Fund are doing this work side by side with community members. They are building trust, strengthening relationships, and creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and able to participate fully. These efforts reflect what becomes possible when leadership is shared and collaboration is centered.

The Women of Color Support Group at SAOP creates space for connection, belonging, and mutual support among women of color in Athens County. Supported by the Athens County Foundation, the group meets regularly to build relationships, share resources, and foster a sense of community among participants who understand the intersecting experiences of race and gender. Through monthly gatherings, shared meals, wellness activities, and intentional support of local businesses owned by people of color, the group has helped reduce isolation, strengthen cross-generational relationships, and create lasting friendships. Participants have described the group as a place where they feel seen, valued, and connected, highlighting the powerful impact of pulling up a chair together and building community side by side.

Celebrate Those Who Make a Difference—Submit a Nomination Now!

The Athens County Foundation is now accepting nominations for the Woman of the Year and Senior of the Year awards, which recognize individuals making a meaningful impact in the community.

Presented by the Women’s Fund, the Woman of the Year Award honors a woman who has made a significant impact to the community through leadership, service, or advocacy. The recipient demonstrates a strong commitment to strengthening Athens County by creating opportunities for women and girls through collaboration.

Presented by the Athens Jaycees Senior Fund, the Senior of the Year Award recognizes an individual aged 60 or older who has made a profound impact on the community. Through leadership, volunteerism, or philanthropy, the recipient fosters connections and collaborates to enhance the quality of life in Athens County—especially for fellow seniors.

Nominations must be submitted using the online nomination form by March 13, 2026, at 11:59 PM EST.

On Thursday, January 29, the Athens County Foundation welcomed its members to the Annual Business Meeting to share insights and updates from the past year. The annual business meeting marked a meaningful gathering at the Foundation’s new home at the Athens Armory.

ACF’s annual meeting brought together donors, nonprofit partners, and community members to reflect on a year of progress and shared impact. Incoming Board Chair Karoline Lane opened the meeting by thanking attendees for their generosity, engagement, and ideas, emphasizing that the wide range of contributions, including time, resources, and talents, is essential to strengthening communities across Athens County’s 14 townships. Treasurer Geoff Morgan reported total assets of over $14 million, an increase of approximately $1.25 million driven by donor support and strong market returns. Governance Committee Chair Scott Robe recognized outgoing Chair Julie Paxton Pagan for her leadership and presented a slate of officers and new board members, including Stephanie Wood and Tom Davis, both bringing deep local roots and valuable experience. The meeting also highlighted ACF’s grantmaking impact in fiscal year 2025, with more than $741,000 awarded to support programs spanning arts and culture, education, housing, and food security.

Executive Director Kerry closed the Annual Meeting by reflecting on both the challenges facing Athens County and the strength that comes from working together. She shared how the Foundation’s grantmaking, paired with community programs, is designed to address immediate needs while also strengthening the relationships and systems that help the community thrive over time.

Kerry emphasized that grants are most effective when organizations are connected and supported. By investing in both philanthropy and programs that build leadership , strengthen nonprofits , and create space for collaboration , the Foundation helps ensure that resources go further and have greater impact. This approach was reflected in the Foundation’s recognition as a Civic Hub by the Trust for Civic Life, affirming its role as a trusted convener and supporter of healthy civic life.

She also highlighted the Athens Armory as a tangible example of this work, now reactivated as a shared space for connection, collaboration, and community life. The meeting concluded with gratitude to grantees, donors, and partners, and a reminder that the progress made this year reflects what is possible when people come together around shared purpose. The work ahead will continue to depend on collaboration, trust, and the belief that we can accomplish more for Athens County when we do it together.

The Foundation looks forward to its annual Celebration of Community on April 8, 2026, at Stuart’s Opera House, where it will celebrate the many contributions of individuals, organizations, and partners who help to strengthen Athens County.

The Fall 2025 grant cycle saw an overwhelming response, with total requests reaching over $500,000. In response, ACF increased its spending policy to help meet the extraordinary demand and advance critical community priorities. ACF acknowledges the tremendous support from donor advised funds, whose participation has played a pivotal role in enabling the Foundation to fund more projects than it could accomplish alone. This collaborative effort reflects the power of community-driven philanthropy and the collective commitment to making a positive impact on Athens County.

Leadership Athens County Celebrates 2020 & 2021 Cohorts

LAC Flagship Graduation

On Thursday evening December 11 at the new home of the Athens County Foundation, the Athens Armory, we welcomed representatives from the 2020 and 2021 cohorts of Leadership Athens County. Two cohorts from 2020 and one from 2021 were the heroes of pivoting. They went through our program through leadership transitions and a global pandemic. And through their experience, they are helping to lead Athens County with resilience and perseverance.

As Kerry Pigman, Executive Director of the Athens County Foundation, said “ You are the mission in motion. LAC grows informed citizens, nurtures connections, and strengthens the leadership ecosystem that keeps our region moving forward.”

Congratulations, officially, graduates!

Flagship Program

Over a 9-month course, LAC participants are challenged to question their understanding of Athens’ economic, political, social, and cultural landscape through discussions of current issues and conversations with community leaders. They learn about a complex array of topics including poverty, food insecurity, regional employment, economic development, housing, transportation, arts and culture, history, health care options, behavioral health, prisons, natural resources, and education – all while making important personal and professional connections.

Many of our 400-plus alumni still live and work in Athens County and - importantly - they call on each other (and us) to help solve problems, brainstorm new ideas, and feel connected to their community. These relationships and shared experiences provide fuel for future partnerships and co-creations .

The goals and objectives for Leadership Athens County are to:

Build relationships, connections, and community
Help guide participants to a deeper understanding of their strengths and priorities for engagement
Share Athens County’s assets and challenges, and encourage creative problem solving
Share knowledge, resources, and challenges in the spirit of creating an informed, connected web of community leaders

Emily Prince is ACF's New Communications and Engagement Manager

The Athens County Foundation is excited to welcome Emily Prince as our new Communications and Engagement Manager. With a background rooted in arts leadership, nonprofit service, and collaborative storytelling, Emily brings a dynamic and deeply community-centered approach to her new role.

Emily’s professional journey has included roles such as Operations Director at Stuart’s Opera House, Training and Activation Director for Air Collaborative, and Program Specialist at Arts West. She has also served as Education and Development Director at Stuart’s Opera House, contributing to the growth and sustainability of arts and cultural programming in the region.

"I am over the moon and honored to be creating this new role at the Athens County Foundation,” Prince said. “After having been involved with the Foundation one way or another since I participated in the inaugural class of Leadership Athens County, it feels like coming home."

Her earlier career began in New York where she worked as a producer, stage manager, actor, director, casting director, and dramaturge. These diverse roles helped shape her belief in the importance of story, creativity, and collaboration as tools for change.

Since returning to Athens County in 2005, Emily has continued to lead with heart and vision—graduating from the inaugural Leadership Athens County class, co-chairing its alumni network, and serving on numerous boards, including the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education and the Nelsonville Rotary Club. Emily lives on a farm in Athens County with her husband and sons, where she enjoys crafting, writing, and supporting creative projects that enrich local life.

“Emily brings more than communications experience; she brings a way of working that reflects our values of courage, inclusion, trust, collaboration, and hope,” said Kerry Pigman, Executive Director. “Her approach will help deepen relationships, build stronger community ties, and engage more people in more places across Athens County.”

From the stages of New York to the heart of Appalachia, Emily has used her voice to lift up others and create spaces where ideas and people thrive. She brings a deep belief in the power of connection, and we’re excited for her to help us engage more people in more places across Athens County. Through storytelling, creative outreach, and authentic collaboration, Emily will help share the incredible voices of our region and strengthen the bonds that move us forward together.

In her role at ACF, Emily will lead communications and outreach strategies that align with the Foundation’s mission to build on the strengths of our community, advancing participation and collaboration to address longstanding challenges and pursue extraordinary opportunities. We’re honored to have Emily join the ACF team and look forward to the impact she will make through her storytelling, engagement, and leadership.

Athens Armory opens as new home to Athens County Foundation and BlueDot Coworking

September 30 open house draws stakeholders

and community members alike.

After being shuttered for decades, the historic Athens Armory at the north end of Court Street is now open; the newly renovated building is home to the Athens County Foundation and BlueDot Coworking & Event Space .

“We see the Armory as a renewed heartbeat in the center of our county – a place where people can connect, where conversations spark ideas, where partnerships are formed, and where our community’s past and future intersect,” said Kerry Pigman, ACF executive director. ACF provided seed funding for BlueDot Coworking and collaboration to make the Armory renovation happen. “The Athens County Foundation is proud to help steward this moment and this space,” Pigman added.

ACF’s move to the Armory creates a more welcoming and accessible space for the community. The new location offers room for gatherings, deeper connection, and collaboration. It also supports the Foundation’s programs like Project Co-Create, Strengths+Strengths workshops for nonprofits, and Leadership Athens County. Pigman added that she “hopes this new space makes it easier for more people to get involved and shape what’s next for Athens County.”

The September 30 open house event drew hundreds of people interested in viewing the $6.5 million renovation; attendees had the opportunity to explore the space’s amenities – including the central, spacious event space named Logueville Great Hall after the late City of Athens planner, Paul Logue.

Additionally, residents and visitors took in the ACF offices as well as the space’s business office spaces, flexible workstations, meeting areas and a shared-use kitchen – all designed to support remote workers, freelancers and small business owners across Athens County.

BlueDot Coworking is a nonprofit developed to meet the rising demand for professional, flexible workspace in the region. The shared space model supports the growing number of professionals working remotely or launching businesses in Southeast Ohio, while fostering networking and cross-sector collaboration.

Sadie Meade, director of BlueDot Coworking, shared her excitement about the space, particularly the coworking space, which she said will create opportunity for community collaborations. “Folks who will work there from a multitude of organizations and entrepreneurial perspectives will build proximal relationships with one another,” she said, “That work together can become really natural (through) a coffee, walk.”

Meade praised the Athens County Foundation. “From a community standpoint, they bring a whole community of folks with them,” she said. Meade is currently enrolled in Leadership Athens County , a leadership development program sponsored by ACF. “It feels very serendipitous,” Meade said.

Big Announcement: Athens County Foundation Receives National Recognition

Dear Friends of the Athens County Foundation,

We are thrilled to share some great news: the Athens County Foundation (ACF) has been selected as a Civic Hub grantee in recognition of our work to advance collaborative solutions in Athens County!

What does this mean?

It means we're on to something here in Athens County. Over 400 leaders have taken part in Leadership Athens County. We've come together to form Co-Create projects to focus on important issues like housing. And we're helping local nonprofits grow stronger through capacity building programs and grantmaking. Now, with the support from the Trust for Civic Life, we'll be able to invest even more into the programs that fuel collaboration and progress.

Bridge the Gap Fund supports our neighbors in crisis

When systems fall short, this fund steps in.

Elizabeth (not her real name) is a single mom in Athens County who was couch surfing with her son for more than eight months. Unable to come up with nearly $2,000 for a first month’s rent and deposit for her own place, she reached out to a local social service agency for help. That agency was able to access money for these costs from the Bridge the Gap Fund, a flexible emergency fund held by the Athens County Foundation that helps cover basic needs not otherwise supported by existing funding sources.

“The help I received literally put a roof over our heads,” Elizabeth says. The assistance she received is a grant, ensuring that she will not have the additional worry about paying the money back.

“This exemplifies the reason Bridge the Gap Fund was created,” says Kerry Pigman, executive director of the Athens County Foundation, which houses the fund. “Sometimes our neighbors face a crisis situation, and existing programs can’t quickly fill the gap. Bridge the Gap does literally just that – it bridges a financial gap that can be the difference between stability and crisis.”

Since its inception in May, the fund has given nearly $25,000 to 19 individuals or families. This quick, responsive infusion of funds has:

Kept the utilities on
Gotten people into stable housing by paying a security deposit or rent
Made a car payment so someone could get to their new job

ACF does not distribute the funds directly; the foundation works with local service providers who know our community, understand the systems in place, and can ensure help goes where it’s truly needed. These partners guide individuals to every available resource – and when nothing else can meet the need, Bridge the Gap steps in.

Inaugural Nonprofit Staff Retreat Restores and Connects

Gathering

As morning sunlight illuminated the dewy grass at the Ora Anderson trailhead, 17 staff members from Athens County nonprofit organizations gathered on September 10th for the inaugural retreat hosted by Athens County Foundation. Folks assembled in The Loft of the Dairy Barn Arts Center to restore capacity and encourage connections between their organizations. Dani Esperanza, the event facilitator and host, began the day by reading an excerpt of Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer which set the dynamic for the retreat as an open and collaborative space that allowed for vulnerability and bravery among those attending and sharing their experiences in nonprofit work. This dynamic was maintained throughout the self-care sessions, group discussions, and team building activities.

Members of the group were encouraged to create their own paths with self-care activities including mindful movement led by Shei Sanchez, a conversation on wellbeing facilitated by Rachel Siegel, healing touch by Andrew Shackelford and Amanda Birt, and a self-led creative station. Agency and adaptability through the created paths gave folks a chance to reflect and recognize what would be best for them, which helped to highlight the theme of restoring individual capacity. With options like chair yoga, the ability to choose what healing touch is most comfortable, and different creative activities folks were given space to voice their needs and care for themselves.

Guarding From Burn-Out

During a fishbowl conversation, folks shared their own experiences working with nonprofit organizations to help give insights on burnout and self-care before moving to team building activities to encourage interagency connections. Those attending the retreat shared the different ways burnout shows up, both mentally and physically, and shared how they prevent or recover from burnout. One person shared the benefits of leaning into the positive energy preceding burnout and how they “let the dumpster fire lead the way,” while another shared the negative impacts burnout has had on their physical health to emphasize the importance of recovery time and self-care. Many folks connected with the metaphor of a marathon runner taking a day to recover after a race, realizing that a recovery day after important events could be essential to preventing burnout. This metaphor connected to a larger theme of the discussion revolving around giving oneself permission to recover and take time for yourself, despite feeling like there is always something to do while working for a nonprofit organization.

Following the fishbowl conversation, folks moved to team building activities to foster interagency connections. Recreating sounds of the rainforest, creating conga lines, and giving each other nicknames provided levity following brave conversations, while helping improve strategies for teamwork. The diversity of the group and the activities folks participated in contributed to another important theme of the retreat: the importance of building a strong network to collaborate with others and embrace individual strengths. Team building activities allowed the group to solve problems in creative ways and strategize with one another before leading to the final discussion of the day.

Possibilities

When the group was asked “What’s possible here?” they gave answers that built on the day’s themes involving giving yourself permission to recover, care for yourself, and make room for collaboration. The next question, “How do we succeed together?” transformed these themes into tangible goals. The group focused on the importance of sharing tools with one another, meeting people where they are, asking for help, and curating space. The culmination of this conversation led to a commitment to regular cadence of intentionally meeting to share tools, give space for shared learning, and continue to build on the connections created through the day. Rather than divide and conquer, this group chooses to share and thrive while creating a unique space for nonprofit employees to grow and learn.

The Athens County Foundation will host its Inaugural Nonprofit Staff Retreat on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Dairy Barn Arts Center. The retreat is open to two staff members from each nonprofit organization located in—or serving—Athens County.

This immersive, day-long gathering is thoughtfully designed to foster personal renewal, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and support collective resilience. Participants will begin in a structured welcome, then follow their own “path” through a range of self-care experiences—including mindful movement, a facilitated conversation on wellbeing, healing touch, and creative engagement.

Leadership Athens County Celebrates Class of 2025

The Athens County Foundation graduated its 2025 class of Leadership Athens County in May. In total, 17 members of the Flagship LAC program and 18 members of LAC Youth were recognized, bringing the total number of program graduates to more than 400 over 19 years of the program.

“Leadership development – especially inclusive, courageous and hopeful leadership – is a long-term investment,” said Kerry Pigman, ACF executive director, “Through mentorship, training and experiential learning, we’re building a pipeline of changemakers ready to take on complex challenges and create equitable, lasting solutions.”

Leadership Athens County is a place-based and asset-focused leadership program, aimed at developing a corps of informed citizens to provide dynamic community leadership. LAC brings together emerging leaders to inform, connect and inspire community-minded individuals to engage in service. LAC also helps participants develop and understand their own leadership styles.

Dani Esperanza, ACF program director, reflected on the strengths of the program and its graduates. “We don’t need a ‘hero’ leader who will save the day and come up with all the solutions. We need to identify our individual and collective strengths, harness them to make change and support one another throughout the process,” Esperanza said, “LAC is one tool in our community’s toolbox to do this.”

Members of each cohort took turns introducing one another and presented certificates of LAC completion. Common words used to describe fellow graduates included kind, creative, passionate, wise, persistent, caring and funny.

Leadership Athens County Youth graduates are Abbi Elliott, Abby Chase, Adam Sheehan, Andrea Davis, Aris Bashaw, Asher Martin, Avery Sullivan, Enrique Ulloa, Jack Rutter, Julia Borovicka, Kate Kotses, Max King, Mya Shultz, Noah Logue, Raquel de Abreu, Theo Smucker, Walker Stone and Wally Meek.

Leadership Athens County Flagship graduates are Ahmed Hamed, Avery Snyder, Brittany Eckert, Crissa Cummings, Hannah Louck, Jean Marie Cackowski, Jeannine Alexander, Jonah Hess, Josie Gogel, Kalynn McCoy, Liana Flores, Mel Koslovic, Naomi Calkins-Golter, Nick Magruder, Olivia Degitz, Tamarine Foreman and Zoey Bryson.

ACF is currently accepting nominations and applications for LAC Flagship 2026 through July 31. LAC is an eight-month course, typically offered from October through May, that develops a corps of informed Athens County leaders who provide dynamic community leadership. Participants explore Athens County’s economic, political, social, and cultural landscape through discussions, tours, meetings with public officials and interactions with community leaders.

Third Nonprofit Leaders Retreat Connects and Inspires

Local nonprofit directors – “unicorns” – talk community, funding

Nonprofit leaders from Athens County gathered on April 16 to connect and brainstorm with one another. Themes that emerged from the daylong retreat included a strong sense of community, inclusivity, interdependence, and the challenges of uncertain funding.

Sponsored by the Athens County Foundation (ACF), executive directors from 20 nonprofits across fields gathered at Stuart’s Opera House to enhance a connected web of community leaders. The gathering served to seek ways to increase individual and organizational capacity and plan a collective story of community mission.

Creating a thriving community

“We’re the civic infrastructure,” said Megan Riddlebarger, executive director of the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development , whose mission is to improve the quality of life for those in Appalachian Ohio. “(It’s) the idea of bringing people from a place of need and suffering to a place of participation and brings up people’s skill level in a way that’s flexible and meaningful.”

Many participants echoed the idea that the local nonprofit sector is critical to the community in Athens County. ACF executive director Kerry Pigman noted that while an organization’s work may seem targeted at a particular population, when it’s done well that work has a ripple effect that makes the community whole and healthy.

Solid Ground School director Christin Butler added, “Human thriving and community thriving is complex … An individual thrives within a thriving community, and a community thrives with individuals.”

Nate Thomson is executive director of the Athens Photo Project , which uses photography as a tool for mental health recovery. He also emphasized the importance of a truly inclusive community. “Mental health and mental wellbeing really requires being part of community, and requires contributing to community,” he said.

Participants talked about an asset-based approach to community development, whether those assets are natural resources, organizational capacity or human capital. Daniel Rogers, executive director of Kids on Campus , said, “So many of the times our kids in our communities are looked at with a deficit mentality … Kids are assets, not obstacles.”

Directors also discussed the “With, not for” approach in which a community is not told by leaders what they need, but rather directs the programming intended to benefit them. Leaders discussed holding more listening sessions in the community to better learn what the community wants.

Challenges of being a nonprofit leader

Nonproft AF blogger Vu Le describes nonprofit leaders as magical unicorns, people who choose to make the world a better place rather than taking higher-pay, higher-prestige jobs that don’t have the social impact as nonprofit work does. While the retreat had some self-care components like chair massage and yoga, the ability to share the challenges of being an executive director with one another proved to be a balm in and of itself.

“I would love people to know how much physical and psychic work there is behind what looks easy and joyful,” said Patty Mitchell, director and founder of Passion Works Studio , which provides employment, opportunity and a sense of creative purpose for people with developmental differences.

Kelly Madewell, executive director of My Sister’s Place domestic violence agency agreed, adding, “The truth is that we are juggling a lot every day that the community does not see and probably does not want to see.”

Dairy Barn Arts Center executive director Leah Magyary echoed this sentiment as well, noting that sometimes the public can take for granted all of the unseen work in the nonprofit sector.

But none of the challenges blunt the enthusiasm for the work or the mutual respect that the leaders have for one another. “We don’t just do what we do to get a paycheck,” said Boone Troyer, executive director of Visit Athens County , “Everyone is taking it one step further and completely committed to all aspects of the work, not just the main mission.”

Jack Pepper, administrator of the Athens City County Health Department , used one word to describe the day’s cohort: dedicated. “There’s just an extraordinary amount of dedication in this room,” he said.

(Social) return on investment

Another recurring theme at the retreat was the fact that the nonprofit sector in Athens County has a large, positive economic impact. Nick Tepe, director of Athens County Public Libraries , pointed to figures that show every tax dollar invested in public library systems in Ohio produces three dollars in return.

ACF’s Pigman added, “All of our organizations together are an economic engine for Athens County. Our organizations employ a lot of people, provide resources for people who are shopping in stores, renting apartments. If those things go away, a lot of things that everyone in our community values go away.”

A concept that is new to the public that these directors have known about for years is the concept of social return on investment . While return on investment (ROI) measures the monetary profits of an investment, social return on investment (SROI) measures the broader range of impacts, like social and environmental impacts, and assigns a dollar amount to those as well.

Passion Works engaged on an SROI report with Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service . “I have been so grateful for Voinovich to have a report to hand to a donor or a friend to the studio. $8.2 million is the effect of the studio on our region,” Passion Works’ Mitchell said.

Ari Faber, acting executive director of United Campus Ministries , noted that while UCM feeds scores of people every week through its free meals program, “Our meals that we serve are not just about food insecurity. They are also about leadership and about building community and combating social isolation.”

Tanya Hire, market manager for the Athens Farmers Market , said, “I really like our tagline, ‘Nourishing Community Since 1972’ … When you talk about nourishing, of course it’s the food, the nutrition. We also nourish the community … people come there to meet their friends, they meet their families.”

Funding challenges

The executive directors did not shy away from the challenges they face, primarily funding. The libraries’ Tepe said, “We have an amazingly strong and interwoven community, but that should not stop us from looking at the challenges we are facing and thinking about collectively the really hard work it takes to face those challenges. This group gets it.”

Many of the social services offered in Athens County are state or federally funded in one way or another, whether it’s Medicaid, community development block grants or something else.

“The primary constraint that our school faces is not in the knowledge or the skill of the practitioners or educators, or participants and community members,” Solid Ground School’s Butler said, “The primary constraint is the complex nature of school funding and how it reflects the socioeconomic realities of society at large.”

Pepper from the health department said, “I want our community to know how much I value them. Because the bulk of our funding comes from the taxpayers in Athens County. If our levies go away tomorrow, I lose half of our budget that runs the Athens City County Health Department.”

Small, bold steps

The group brainstormed next steps they can collectively take to strengthen and enhance their organizations, individually and collectively. Primary ideas that came from the session included attending one another’s events, collectively sharing data and stories for the organizations as a whole, a mentorship program to match EDs for deeper learning, a place for shared communication like a listserv, and formalizing a shared services program.

ACF, in partnership with the public libraries, will continue the group through a monthly lunch meeting the second Wednesday of each month at the Athens Public Library. The next meeting is scheduled for July 9.

Participants left with a renewed sense of belonging and mutual purpose. “What came out of this for me is, live locally,” Hire from the farmers market said, “Your life is centered and grounded here.”

Sarah Grace, executive director of Community Food Initiatives , quoted a similar sentiment from mentor Leslie Schaller: “The future is local.”

5 Red Flags That Could Hurt Your Grant Application (And How to Avoid Them)

Boost your chances of a positive response by steering clear of these five common pitfalls.

Grantmaking is a bit like matchmaking—only instead of pairing people, we’re connecting passion with resources. At the Athens County Foundation, we invest in individuals and organizations that are too passionate to sit still. We’re here to support strong, thoughtful applications that reflect this energy and drive real change.

To make the right connections, though, we need to understand both what matters to our community and what motivates our applicants. That means your proposal must do more than outline a plan. It should communicate your purpose clearly, build trust, and show the potential for meaningful impact.

From time to time, we come across proposals that raise concerns. These "red flags" don’t necessarily disqualify an application, but they can make it harder for reviewers to fully understand or trust the project. The good news is that most of these issues are easy to address with some planning and awareness. Below, we share five common missteps and how to avoid them, so your great ideas have the best chance to shine.

1. Vague Goals or Unclear Plans

Red Flag: The application doesn’t clearly explain what the project is trying to do, how it will be done, or who it will serve.

Why it matters: Reviewers need to understand your vision and the steps you’ll take to bring it to life. Without that clarity, it’s hard to see how the grant funds will be used or what impact they’ll have.

How to avoid it:
Break your project down into clear objectives, activities, and outcomes. Think about what success looks like and how you’ll measure it. Specifics are your friend.

A note on early-stage projects:
If your project is still in the early phases, we understand you may not have all the answers just yet. In those cases, we strongly encourage you to reach out to ACF staff to discuss your idea and explore whether it’s a good fit. We've supported many pilot projects, but when a proposal is still developing, we need more communication to build confidence in your vision. Engaging us early and being transparent about where you are in the process helps build trust and allows us to support you more effectively.

2. Budgets That Don’t Match the Story

Red Flag: The proposed budget is unrealistic, incomplete, or doesn’t align with the goals described in the application.

Why it matters: A budget tells the story of how your project will actually happen. If the numbers don’t line up with the plan or leave out key details, it can raise questions about feasibility and impact.

How to avoid it: Make sure your budget reflects the work you’re proposing. Be transparent about costs, and if anything is estimated, say so. Don’t forget to include in-kind support, matching funds, or other sources of revenue if they apply.

A note about expectations:

We don’t expect your budget to be calculated down to the last cent, though that level of detail is always helpful. More importantly, we’re not here to audit your numbers. Your budget helps us understand how we can best support your work, while also ensuring that resources are distributed wisely so more organizations can benefit. When your financial plan aligns with your goals, it strengthens our confidence in your vision.

3. Overuse of AI or Generic Language

Red Flag: The proposal feels overly polished but impersonal, with language that could apply to almost any project.

Why it matters: We want to hear your voice and understand the unique context of your work. When a proposal reads like it was entirely generated by AI or pulled from a generic template, it can feel disconnected or insincere. Some stories are best told in your own words, even if they’re raw, informal, or a little unpolished.

How to avoid it: AI tools can be helpful for refining your ideas (yes, we love our ACFbot—and no, she didn’t make us say that; and yes, she uses pronouns too!). But let your voice lead the way. Use these tools to support your writing, not to substitute your story. What matters most is that your purpose comes through clearly and genuinely. We’re not grading your grammar; we’re listening for your vision.

A note if you're using AI:

If AI is part of your process, take time to review your draft or ask a peer to read it with fresh eyes. There are often telltale signs of AI-generated text, and while that’s not an issue on its own, proposals that lack specificity or depth can raise questions and may delay the review process. Using AI won’t disqualify your application—we’re not your teachers—but it may prompt additional follow-up. If you’re unsure how to express a piece of your proposal, please reach out to our staff. We’re here to support you and help you communicate your vision with confidence.

4. Lack of Community Connection

Red Flag: The proposal doesn’t clearly show how the project connects with or responds to the Athens County community (or for RCIF, Rocky Brands’ priority communities).

Why it matters: Our funding is grounded in supporting local solutions. If a project feels disconnected from community needs or lacks local input, it’s harder for us to understand its relevance or impact.

How to avoid it: Describe how you’ve engaged with the community, who you’re partnering with, and how your work responds to real needs or opportunities in Athens County. Including letters of support can help tell that story. If your organization is based outside the county you serve and you’re looking to build stronger connections, reach out—we’ll be happy to help you get plugged in.

5. No Plan for Sustainability

Red Flag: The project sounds promising, but there’s no clear plan for what happens after the grant ends.

Why it matters: We want to support projects that can grow, evolve, or continue to benefit the community beyond the initial funding. If there’s no path forward, it can raise concerns about lasting impact.

How to avoid it: Think about what comes next. Will this grant help you build something that continues through partnerships, future funding, or community ownership? Even if it’s a one-time project, share how the results will live on or inform future work.

Supporting LGBTQ+ organizations and initiatives through
community-guided grantmaking.

The Athens County Foundation (ACF) is proud to announce the launch of the Athens County Pride Fund , a new fund dedicated to supporting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community across Athens County. Lead gifts from longtime donors seeded the fund, and additional supporters are invited to contribute. The fund will provide resources to eligible nonprofit organizations and public entities committed to serving the local LGBTQ+ community through outreach, education, events, and other vital programming.

The Athens County Pride Fund reflects ACF’s deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-led change. Like other ACF-affiliated Field of Interest Funds, grantmaking will follow a participatory process, guided by an advisory committee composed of diverse community members with lived experience and close connection to the issues.

“This is an important moment for Athens County,” said Kerry Pigman, Executive Director. “The Pride Fund connects passion with purpose—and powers a sense of belonging that strengthens our entire community. This fund is more than a grantmaking tool—it’s a way for community members to show their commitment to an Athens County where every person feels seen, valued, and empowered. The Pride Fund joins ACF’s growing portfolio of Field of Interest Funds that prioritize participatory grantmaking and community engagement. Introducing the ACF Flexible Microgrants Program

What began as an emergency response in 2020 has grown into something much more.

The Athens County Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the Flexible Microgrants Program —a streamlined funding opportunity shaped by five years of listening, learning, and evolving alongside our community. Designed to be responsive and accessible, this program offers gap-filling grants of up to $3,000 per organization per year , available when and where they are needed most.

An evolution of our previous Response and Capacity Building Grants, this new iteration offers expanded flexibility to meet a wide range of organizational needs, including:

Bridging funding gaps left by other sources
Responding to unexpected opportunities or challenges
Covering essential operational costs such as rent, staff salaries, or wellness resources
Supporting projects that foster community engagement, build a sense of belonging, and increase visibility for historically marginalized groups

A lookback at the Housing Security Co-Create Group

In January 2024, concerned community members and over 40 organizations came together with a shared commitment to addressing housing insecurity in Athens County. By leveraging collective resources, fundraising, and collaborative problem-solving, the Housing Security Co-Create Group is working toward long-term solutions while addressing immediate needs.

Progress and Milestones

Over the past year, the Housing Security Co-Create Group and its members have made significant strides:

Securing Grant Funding for a Low-Barrier Shelter
Led by HAPCAP and supported by numerous organizations in the Co-Create Group, the Sunset Shelter Project was launched to establish a temporary shelter in Athens County. This shelter will provide individuals experiencing housing instability with dignity, support, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Scheduled to open in 2026, it will be a critical resource for the community.
Establishing the Housing Security Fund
Through the collaboration of generous donors and the investment of ACF, the Athens County Housing Security Fund was created to support key housing initiatives and projects. To date, the fund has awarded over $16,000 to direct service providers working to provide winter housing for unhoused individuals in the community.
Supporting the Emergency Motel Voucher Program
Led by My Sister’s Place (MSP) .This pilot project is a pilot initiative streamlining the referral process and operations to providing temporary, safe shelter for individuals and families in immediate need.
Launching the Emergency Warming Center
The Gathering Place, in partnership with the City of Athens, established an emergency overnight warming center at the Columbus Road Firehouse. This vital resource provided a warm, safe refuge for individuals, families, and even pets during the harsh winter months.
Improving Resource Navigation and Reducing Poverty Stigma
Efforts are ongoing to enhance resource navigation in the community, ensuring that those in need can easily access essential services. Stigma reduction is also a key focus, with education and advocacy initiatives already in motion. One notable example is the Grover Lecture Series featuring Matthew Desmond , which has helped foster important discussions on poverty and housing insecurity.
Learning from Best Practices
As the Co-Create Group continues its work, members remain committed to researching and evaluating successful housing interventions in other communities. By learning from proven strategies, we can refine and strengthen our local approach.

These achievements highlight the value of co-creation—pooling resources and making shared decisions to produce lasting, community-driven solutions. As we move into our second year, our commitment remains steadfast: to address the full spectrum of housing security needs in Athens County.

Housing Report Highlights Urgent Needs in Athens County

The Athens County Foundation (ACF), in partnership with Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service, has released the Housing in Athens County 2024 Report, offering critical insights into Athens County’s housing challenges.

The report reveals a significant shortage of affordable housing, particularly for low-income residents, with only 3.5 affordable units available for every 10 extremely low-income households. Additionally, rental and home prices have risen sharply since 2018, limiting options for many families. Despite these challenges, the report highlights promising developments, including new affordable housing projects and increased collaboration among local organizations to address the crisis.

ACF Reports Record Growth, Expands Efforts to Strengthen Athens County

Athens, OH – The Athens County Foundation (ACF) convened its Annual Business Meeting on Thursday evening at the Ohio University Inn, bringing together business owners, nonprofit leaders, donors, and past and present board members. The event, hosted by ACF’s Board and staff, served as a platform to celebrate the milestones of Fiscal Year 2024 and share the Foundation’s vision for the future.

Treasurer Geoff Morgan opened with a financial update, reporting a $1.74 million increase in ACF’s endowment, bringing the total assets to $12.9 million.

Board member Tee Ford-Ahmed followed with a grants update, highlighting ACF’s impact through 210 grants totaling $810,000—a $242,000 increase from the previous year. These grants were distributed across multiple programs, including ACF’s Fall Cycle, the Rocky Community Improvement Fund’s Fall and Spring Cycles, Nonprofit Capacity Building grants, and Donor Advised Fund grants.

During the administrative proceedings, Scott Robe, Chair of the Governance Committee, facilitated board nominations. The assembly enthusiastically confirmed Rebecca Robison-Miller and Dan Stroh as first-term board members, while Jane Cavarozzi was approved for a second term.

A Strategic Vision for the Future

ACF’s Executive Director Kerry Pigman delivered the keynote address, unveiling the Foundation’s new strategic framework: “Learn while doing, build while evolving.”

Reflecting on ACF’s journey since its founding in the 1980s by eight visionary women, Pigman underscored the Foundation’s role in strengthening Athens County. Programs like Leadership Athens County, with over 400 graduates and counting, and the Strengths + Strengths capacity building program continue to drive non-profit development.

Looking ahead, ACF is fully committed to Co-Create , a bold initiative designed to combine and mobilize local assets, resources, and expertise to achieve shared community goals. Informed by a decade of ACF’s work and inspired by successful national models of participatory change-making, Co-Create fosters connection, cooperation, and collaborations for sustainable progress.

ACF Receives ServeOhio Grant for MLK Service Day

Book Drive and Service Day at the Tablertown People of Color Museum Happening in January!

On November 1, the Athens County Foundation (ACF) was awarded the ServeOhio MLK Day of Service grant. Impassioned by the legacy of service left by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the mission of this grant is to help nonprofits across the state improve their communities through service and volunteer activities. Like MLK Jr., the Foundation is deeply dedicated to ensuring that all voices are heard, especially those historically excluded, by creating spaces for inclusive participation and co-created solutions. ACF strives to empower both individuals and communities to break down educational barriers and promote local storytelling.

This project is made possible with ACF’s current partnership with Ohio University’s COMCorps Program . ACF’s COMCorps member and Program Coordinator, Hannah Louck, is leading this initiative with the support of ACF and the COMCorps program.

MLK Service Day with Tablertown People of Color Museum

This coming January 28, 2025, ACF will partner with the Tablertown People of Color Museum to uplift local stories through service. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about the long, diverse history of Athens County, while simultaneously participating in an act of service for the museum. Volunteers will work to clean up the land on which a new Tablertown People of Color Museum will be built. On this service day, a Free Little Library will also be donated to the museum and Tablertown community. In addition to a day-of-service, the Athens County Foundation will be holding a book drive throughout the month of January to restock Free Little Libraries throughout Athens County — please stay tuned for more information regarding drop-off locations.

ACF Awards Over $230k in Fall 2024 Grant Cycle

The Athens County Foundation (ACF) is thrilled to announce grant awards from its Fall 2024 grant cycle. Over 40 organizations serving Athens County have been approved for funding, receiving a total of more than $230,000 in support of their impactful projects and programs.

The awarded grants, which span a variety of focus areas including education, health and social services, environmental sustainability, economic development, and the arts, reflect ACF’s dedication to fostering a thriving and inclusive community for all. “These grants represent the power of collaboration and the impact of investing in community strengths,” said Kerry Pigman, Executive Director of the Athens County Foundation. “At the Athens County Foundation, we believe that meaningful change happens when we come together to address challenges and create opportunities. These projects embody our shared commitment to a thriving Athens County.”

This funding cycle also marks an exciting milestone for ACF as a select portion of the grantees have been chosen to participate in the Foundation's pilot implementation of Multi-Year Unrestricted Funding. This funding approach aims to provide grantees with greater flexibility and stability, empowering them to focus on long-term impact. This initiative is part of ACF’s commitment to strengthening the nonprofit sector by exploring new funding models that better address the diverse needs of the community.

“This pilot is an exciting step toward offering innovative funding solutions that empower nonprofits to focus on their missions and sustainability,” said Pigman. “By testing this approach now, we are building the structure needed to expand the program in the future, providing even more robust support to our vibrant nonprofit community.”

ATCO Legacy Fund Fall 2024 RFP

Introduction

The Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities (ACBDD), in partnership with the Athens County Foundation, is proud to announce the 2024 Fall Request for Proposals (RFP) for the ATCO Legacy Fund.

ATCO, which was the ACBDD’s adult services program for nearly 50 years, was a much-beloved program that prioritized advocacy and inclusion for all enrollees in the program. In order to comply with a federal rule, ATCO closed in December 2018 after a three-year transition plan. The ATCO Legacy Fund is designed to allow the ACBDD to carry on the compassion and philosophy developed at ATCO Inc. well into the future. As part of that process, stakeholders helped the ACBDD to identify certain elements from ATCO that could be sustained and enhanced while still remaining in compliance. Those conversations led to the creation of this fund in 2018.

This RFP is designed to offer financial assistance to providers (agency and independent), organizations, and community partners in Athens County interested in working towards integration and inclusive opportunities for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD).

The Athens County Foundation, charged with assisting in the administration of the RFP process, will convene a committee to review all proposals. The committee will then present selection recommendations – based on the criteria outlined below – to the ACBDD’s Superintendent. A more detailed timeline of events is also listed below.

Eligibility

This program is open to any provider of service, community group, organization, or community partner that has the intent to support integration and inclusion for individuals with I/DD in Athens County.

Funding Priorities

These funds can be used for anything creative, so long as it enhances the quality of life AND promotes inclusion/integration for people with I/DD. Examples could be (but not limited to): adapted equipment, transportation needs, technology, innovative programming, and educational material. The structure and funding priorities are intentionally left broad and open-ended to promote creativity and innovation.

Funding Availability

The ACBDD has allocated $20,000.00 for this cycle . Historically, the average award amount has been approximately $3,000, ranging from $900 to $7,500. However, there is no minimum or maximum funding level per request.

Alexander Inclusive Playground Opens to Students, Public

"When we come together and harness our collective strength, we can create spaces that reflect our shared values and build a future where everyone belongs."

On August 15, more than 100 community members gathered for the ribbon-cutting of the first phase of the Alexander Inclusive Playground at Alexander Elementary School. Two years in the making, this playground offers a space where children with mobility, vision, hearing, and sensory challenges can play.

“Together, we have accomplished something truly remarkable – the construction of an inclusive playground that will serve as a symbol of unity, joy, and inclusivity for our school and the entire community,” said Lisa Wigal, co-chair of the Alexander Inclusive Playground Project, as she addressed the attendees. Wigal’s daughter, Emma, uses a wheelchair. “As we stand here today, surrounded by the laughter and joy of our children, let us remember the incredible things we can achieve when we come together as a community.”

One of the first supporters of the project was the Athens County Foundation (ACF). “At the beginning of this project, we met with Diane McVey from Athens Rotary and Kerry Pigman from the Athens County Foundation,” said Alexander Inclusive Playground Project co-chair Annah Korpi. Korpi’s son, Isidoro, also uses a wheelchair. “They said, ‘This sounds interesting, let’s talk.’ That was the vote of confidence I needed … that was worth its weight in gold.”

Kerry Pigman, ACF’s Executive Director, reflected on the journey, saying, “I’m deeply inspired by the dedication and spirit of the parents, children, and community members who have rallied around the Alexander Inclusive Playground project.” This dedication was a driving force behind ACF’s decision to support the playground with a $25,000 fall cycle grant and two additional $3,000 capacity-building grants. These funds helped the playground committee develop a website, print materials, and other resources to seek further funding.

Playground features include a four-foot-tall set of monkey bars accessible from a wheelchair, an accessible central play area, and a wheelchair-accessible “ship” that rocks back and forth. The playground ensures that children of all abilities can interact and play together. “I’m glad they built stuff for people with disabilities (so) they don’t feel left out,” said 14-year-old Jovia Richards, who uses a wheelchair and attended Alexander from kindergarten through eighth grade. She added, “I can do stuff by myself (and) I can actually hang out with my friends. I don’t have to be left out.”

The playground also serves as a public park after school hours, creating a space for the entire community to enjoy. Kerry Pigman emphasized, “The commitment to a participatory process has ensured that this playground truly reflects the needs and dreams of everyone involved. When every voice is heard and every hand contributes, we create not just a playground, but a symbol of unity and shared purpose.”

The committee’s ability to secure additional funding was bolstered by ACF’s initial support. In the end, Ohio Rep. Jay Edwards secured $260,000 from the state capital budget, the Athens County commissioners directed $70,000 from a community development block grant to the playground, and other large donations came from local businesses, foundations, churches, and individuals. The community’s support was overwhelming, with more than 400 individual donations, including contributions as small as $1.43 from a child’s piggy bank and a $2 allowance.

In place of a traditional ribbon-cutting, students ran through a large ribbon, symbolizing the breaking down of barriers that limited the use of traditional playgrounds. The event featured music by DJ B-Funk and food by Larry’s Dawg House and Kona Ice, all sponsored by Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The playground’s next phase will add features such as a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, an inclusive see-saw, and an adaptive seat swing. The final phase will include more play equipment, including a pre-k and kindergarten playground, plus accessible rubber surfacing.

Leadership Athens County Graduation 2024

Athens County Foundation program now has nearly 400 alumni

Athens, OH – The Athens County Foundation graduated its 2024 class of Leadership Athens County Thursday night. In total, 15 members of the Flagship LAC program and 15 members of the inaugural class of Leadership Athens County Youth (LACY) were recognized, bringing the total number of program graduates to nearly 400.

“Programs like Leadership Athens County foster collaboration by bringing together collaborators from various sectors, fostering relationships, and nurturing a spirit of collective action,” said ACF board chair Cheryl Sylvester in remarks at the ceremony. “Over time, these investments create networks of trust and reciprocity, laying the groundwork for impactful collaborations that endure beyond immediate objectives.”

Leadership Athens County is a place-based and asset-focused leadership program, aimed at developing a corps of informed citizens to provide dynamic community leadership. LAC brings together emerging leaders to inform, connect and inspire community-minded individuals to engage in service. LAC also helps participants develop and understand their own leadership styles.

Dani Esperanza, ACF program director, introduced the graduates, noting that this is the seventeenth cohort of the flagship program and the inaugural cohort of the youth program. “Hallmark traits of this year’s Flagship program included curiosity, trust, optimism, and adaptability. Our Youth program shared courage, humor, competitiveness, and engagement,” Esperanza said.

Members of each cohort took turns introducing one another and presented certificates of LAC completion. Common words used to describe fellow graduates included creative, determined, thoughtful, disciplined, positive and inclusive.

Leadership Athens County Youth graduates are Annabelle Lachman, Brielyn Bycofski, Chris Peyton, Claire Abraham, Darius Pierce, Emma-Shea Van Dyke, Jerricka Welsh, Jesse Vaughn, Maddy Penrod, Michaela Sommers, Morgan Mitchell, Prem Koshal, Ryan Everhart, Salome Brajot and Will Odenthal.

Leadership Athens County Flagship graduates are Aaron Kirby, Anna Ezell, Ariel Carver, Billie Kariher, Casey Price, Ellie Hammond, Erin Everhart, Karoline Lane, Kerry Pigman, Kerson Beaubrun, Mike Redington, Rae Lewis, Selena Cottrill, Steve Patterson and Therese Lackey.

City of Athens Mayor Steve Patterson ended the Flagship program introductions by making a surprise announcement. The LAC Flagship cohort announced the creation of the Dani Esperanza Scholarship to support a youth attendant for the 2025 class of Leadership Athens County. Area high school students have already been selected for participation in the upcoming cohort.

ACF is currently accepting nominations for LAC Flagship through May 31. LAC is a nine-month course, typically offered from September through May, that develops a corps of informed Athens County leaders who provide dynamic community leadership. Participants explore Athens County’s economic, political, social, and cultural landscape through discussions, tours, meetings with public officials and interactions with community leaders.

Nelsonville – The Athens County Foundation (ACF) recently recognized several community members for their contributions to the Athens County community, including Chris Knisely as Woman of the Year, Jeff Swaim as Senior of the Year and Sarah Adkins as the Foster B. Cornwell Award recipient. These individuals were recognized April 11 at Stuart’s Opera House during ACF’s A Celebration of Community event.

“The Athens County Foundation draws courage and inspiration from the strengths in this room,” said ACF executive director Kerry Pigman, “I’m delighted to celebrate them tonight.”

At the Athens County Foundation, our promise is to invest in the county’s strengths. To fortify, amplify and magnify them.

For 40 years we’ve been building an infrastructure that works with the county, not just in the county. In the last 10 years, we furthered that commitment by asking ourselves to determine how we could contribute even more to Athens County. Thinking big, we asked the question: what are the core ingredients to advancing positive change, to crafting sustainable solutions, and to reshaping systems to work for more people?

The bottom line: The most effective solutions are the product of participatory change making.

It’s the radical idea that when it’s possible for individuals, organizations, businesses, and institutions to blend their strengths and resources, they will produce lasting, powerful solutions.

With this ambition in mind and building on the practices we’ve already put into motion, ACF is expanding our focus on harmonizing and mobilizing resources across the county to advance important work through collaborations. Now it’s time to radically scale this approach to work for more people in more places, on more big opportunities, in Athens County.

The Athens County Foundation is happy to share the updated Athens County Report!

In 2016, ACF commissioned a report to assess the state of Athens County. This report has influenced the foundation's work and has served as a valuable resource for various community organizations. The current report aims to update information from 2016 and highlight new developments in the county.

Information for the 2024 report was gathered during 2022 through the collection of publicly available secondary data and primary data from community members engaged in serving Athens County. This report discusses the longstanding challenges faced by the community, such as poverty and food insecurity, and the equally enduring work of the community to address the drivers of these complex problems while simultaneously supporting those most impacted by them.

ACF would like to thank Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service , Sunday Creek Horizons , and the many Athens County community members who gave their time to make this report possible.

ACSD Support Fund to support 8th graders trip to Washington DC

The Washington, DC trip is an Athens City School District (ACSD) tradition that dates back to the 1960s! It has always been a wonderful opportunity for ACSD students to learn about the nation’s capital while making memories with their classmates that last a lifetime. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the district’s control, the trip was not possible for the last few years. It is with great excitement that the administrators and teachers at Athens Middle School have worked to make the trip available for this year’s 8th grade class. The tradition is back!

The excitement is palpable, but there’s a crucial element to address. The trip’s expense, at $670.00 per student for the May 2024 trip, poses a financial challenge for many deserving students. Recognizing this, the Athens County Foundation has teamed up with the Athens City School District to ensure that financial constraints don’t hinder any student’s participation.

Here’s where the community steps in. We invite you to be a part of this revival by making a donation. Your support will not only help cover the costs but also contribute to creating an educational, memorable, and enjoyable experience for participating 8th-grade students. Join us in fostering a love for learning and building lasting memories as we rally together to make this trip a reality for our students. Whether you’re applying for your first grant or your tenth, we’re glad you’re here. We know grantwriting can feel a little intimidating, but you don’t have to go it alone. We’ve put together some tips to help guide you through the process, and remind you that we’re here to support you, not just as a funder, but as a partner in making good things happen for Athens County.

1. Let's Get to Know Each Other

One of the best ways to strengthen your application is simply to connect with us. We love learning about the work you’re doing, the people you serve, and the impact you’re making. Reach out to introduce yourself, schedule a quick meeting, or stop and chat when you see us out in the community. Whether it’s through one of our events, leadership programs, or an email conversation, building that relationship helps us better understand how we can support your work.

2. Make the Mission Match

Before you dive into writing, take a look at our funding priorities and strategic goals. Your application will be stronger if it clearly shows how your work aligns with the Foundation’s mission. Start with your “why”—what drives your work, who it serves, and how it connects to the bigger picture. Use a mix of data and real-life stories to bring your vision to life in a way that feels both meaningful and grounded.

3. Lean Into Your Strengths

You’re already doing important, impactful work. Don’t be afraid to talk about your wins—big or small. Share the ways your organization has made a difference, adapted in tough times, and found creative solutions. We’re looking for partners who can confidently name their strengths and also recognize when they need support. Youth Leadership Workshop Success!

In the middle of June, the Athens County Foundation (ACF) hosted a summer youth leadership workshop including nine high-school aged emerging leaders from Athens County to explore our new program, provide feedback, and engage in their own leadership journey. Modeled after our flagship Leadership Athens County (LAC) program, Leadership Athens County Youth (LACY) is an eight-month place-based education program for emerging and not-yet-identified leaders of high-school age. Aimed to build a sense of pride in Athens County and Appalachia, introduce core leadership competencies, initiate personal transformation and mastery, as well as prepare emerging leaders to collaborate, innovate, and participate in existing networks. As part of our commitment to co-creating programs and solutions, Athens County Foundation launched this three-day summer workshop to gather feedback and test logistics.

The workshop started out with a mini-retreat and introduction to the program where we took part in team building activities and heard from our strengths and leadership coach, Lauren Borovicka of Authentic Insights, LLC, LAC Class of 2016. After lunch delivered by Donato’s pizza, we went to the Dairy Barn Arts Center outdoor patio to hear from local leader exemplar, Mary Nally of OHIO University’s Center for Community Engagement , LAC Class of 2014 about her unique leadership journey. Finishing out the day, students learned the importance of documenting a journey and the variety of ways one can process those thoughts.

Day 2

With everyone more comfortable with each other, the second day in Chauncey opened bigger conversations around Appalachian culture and history, communication skills, learning through play, and shifting narratives in storytelling. We heard from Village of Chauncey Mayor Amy Renner about the history of Chauncey and how the community is adapting and innovating to usher in the future of outdoor recreation as we toured the new bike path extension from the Chauncey Community Park. The cohort took this time for a brief detour to visit the Baileys Trail System and read the Storybook Trail that is a partnership with Athens County Public Library . Finally, we finished the morning with just plain fun at the new community park playground equipment.

After lunch from Eclipse Company Store , we dove into a writing prompt inspired by Kentucky Poet Laureate George Ella Lyon about realizing where one’s from is more than just a place – it’s experiences, textures, smells, and memories. Then students were eager to hear from Brandon Thompson of Survivor Advocacy Outreach Program , DJ B-Funk, and community event planner, LAC Class of 2020, share his leadership journey as an exemplar. Capping off the day, we used our creative juices to create paper quilt squares that reflect the mosaic of our cohort.

Day 3

On the final day of our workshop, we visited the Federal Valley Resource Center in Stewart, Ohio. The cohort started out revisiting some of the team building activities with additional challenges built in. We discussed the improvement that happened from the first time to the final time and how relationships build trust and communication that ultimately make outcomes better. Excitedly we heard from Mallory Swaim of Mathews Insurance , LAC Class of 2022 share the dozens of groups and activities one can get involved with to build capacity within communities, and how a single volunteer can impact large systems and make connections between organizations. Our leadership competency for the day focused on project and time management and how teams prioritize tasks within a larger project.

Lunch was delivered from Park’s Place and fueled the cohort for the final afternoon. Reflecting on challenges and issues that affect them, we completed the circles of influence activity to understand where folks may or may not have control, and how they might have influence and how to utilize those resources. This was put into action immediately as the cohort problem solved how to retrieve a toy that was stuck from lunch-time games. They were successful!

Then we took time to hear from one member of their own cohort, Nelsonville-York Junior Claire Abraham, founder of the nonprofit the Kathyrn McCoy Resource Project. She shared that you didn’t need to have all the answers or know exactly what to do but when you see a need you’re called to make a difference.

In Summary

As we closed out the workshop, our closing circle and debrief we were grateful to receive a wealth of feedback from students including how eye-opening this experience was. The consensus was that visiting these different locations, eating local foods, and hearing from local leaders was “really cool.” Another student shared that they felt more confident expressing what they see as needs to be addressed. A third student shared how helpful it was to see leaders who spoke about doubt, uncertainty, and joy in their own leadership journey. One student said that their biggest take away was that they didn’t need to wait to be an adult to make a difference and be a leader.

While staff have some minor adjustments to make, overwhelmingly, participants shared their optimism and excitement for the full pilot launching in October 2023 and many committed to being a part of it.

Appalachian Community Grant Program Award

$2 million community-focused renovations to The Athens Armory will support business growth, remote working, leadership development, nonprofit support services

Athens, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted announced the first-round recipients of the Appalachian Community Grant Program, which includes the planned renovations of The Athens Armory. The Athens Armory project was funded as part of a larger four-county initiative called At Work in Appalachia. Developed in partnership by the City of Athens and other Appalachian communities, At Work in Appalachia establishes coordinated, interconnected remote work and entrepreneur hubs, and locally-designed health and workforce development programming through a series of public and private partnerships.

“This landmark investment in Appalachia is going to change lives and improve communities,” said Athens Mayor Steve Patterson. “The communities of the At Work in Appalachia program express their deepest gratitude to Governor DeWine, Lieutenant Governor Husted, Director Mihalek, Director Carey, and to all of the partners who helped make this program a success.”

In addition to The Athens Armory, the funds will help complete several capital projects within four Appalachian communities of Ohio: The Logan Theater in Logan; The Space at the Hocking Hills Chamber of Commerce; The Somerset Builder’s Club in Somerset; and the Coshocton Collaborative in Coshocton. These projects are “lynchpin” projects, which will breathe new vibrancy into long-neglected downtown districts, and will serve as catalysts for further improvements and development.

“The Athens Armory is an iconic community asset, built for civic purpose,” said Kerry Pigman, executive director of the Athens County Foundation. “It will now have a new life, adapted for advancing our Athens County communities today. We are grateful to have worked alongside the City of Athens and so many community partners and individuals whose ideas shaped the vision for how this space would best serve Athens county and our region.”

The plans for The Athens Armory call for a community gathering space that will be available for use by organizations and the general public. Portions of the building will be designed as shared workspace and the permanent offices for the Athens County Foundation. The Athens County Foundation is expanding and evolving their flagship Leadership Athens County Program to provide new opportunities for collaboration, skill-building, and community service to emerging leaders, youth, and the more than 300 alumni of the program. From this new space, the Athens County Foundation will be able to offer expanded services that respond to community needs and help nonprofits to thrive and be sustainable.

In total, the At Work in Appalachia initiative was awarded $17,674,641 from the Ohio Department of Development and the Governor’s Office of Appalachia through the Appalachian Community Grant Program. The program dedicated $500 million to Ohio’s 32-county Appalachian region through House Bill 377 and is intended to revitalize communities and stimulate transformational change through specific projects that focus on infrastructure development, physical and behavioral health, and workforce development. At Work in Appalachia is one of four projects that received funding in this $50 million first round of awards.

Founded in 1980, the Athens County Foundation invests in local strategies to empower Athens County residents and build on the strengths of our region now and for generations to come .

Joyce Lewis Named 2021 Senior of the Year

The Athens County Foundation (ACF) and the Athens Jaycees Senior Fund Advisory Board awarded the 2021 Senior of the Year award to Joyce Lewis for her support for senior citizens in Athens County for over three decades.

In her work at the United Seniors of Athens County, Joyce has been serving seniors throughout Athens County for many years. Serving as the Executive Director since 2015, and as the Community Services Director prior to that, Joyce guides the nonprofit agency to carry out the mission of helping senior citizens remain active, independent, and in their own homes as long as possible.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Joyce’s care for seniors extended to mobilizing the agency and partners to provide services such as food distribution to those who are homebound and have no transportation. The agency also provided masks and information about masks and encouraged community organizations and families to give masks to their senior family members.

“Well, if longevity counts, Joyce has it,” Judge L. Alan Goldsberry said. “She has been committed to seniors for many years. She has provided help in many forms, including just plain old listening and understanding. You could always count on her to communicate with a senior and explain how to get the help of whatever kind needed. There are times when she provided the help herself,” he added.

On March 24, 2022, Joyce received the award at Stuart’s Opera House during ACF’s A Celebration of Community .

Dr. Sheila Williams is Athens County’s 2021 Woman of the Year

The Athens County Foundation Women’s Fund awarded the 2021 Woman of the Year Award to Dr. Sheila Williams for her contributions to behavioral health in Athens County over the course of her lifetime.

A practicing counselor in Athens County since 1976, Dr. Sheila Williams has impacted the lives of countless women. Additionally, her significant volunteer and advocacy work has made a difference in Athens County for women experiencing substance use disorders and in advancing racial equity.

Dr. Williams was an early board member of Clem House, a residential program for men in recovery. She remained on the board for more than 8 years. Although Clem House serves men, her work helped shape policies and practices that have a ripple effect on women and children in our community. As the male residents learn how to become better partners, providers, and fathers, the women and daughters in their lives benefit greatly. Recognizing the need for a similar residential facility for local women struggling with substance use disorders she and a group of area women set about making that happen. Dr. Williams applied her prior experience directing an ongoing weekend residential program for incarcerated youth with substance use disorders, supervising counselors in a jail alternate residential program for adults with DUIs, and her experience on the Clem House Board, to help create a recovery house for women in Athens County. In 2018, she became the board president of Women for Recovery, the parent organization for the now established Serenity Grove Recovery House for Women, and remains in that role to this day. Dr. Williams’ counseling expertise is an asset for residents, as she can advise staff on how to assist with behavioral challenges such as eating disorders, self-esteem issues, and collaborative relationships within the temporary “family” of Serenity Grove.

Dr. Williams’ commitment to racial equity has also made an impact in Athens County. “Sheila’s experience as a person of color who raised her family in a predominantly white community has challenged each of us to learn about ourselves and to put what we learn into action, words, and deeds,” said Janalee Stock, fellow board member at Serenity Grove. In 1988, Sheila co-founded Students Teaching About Racism in Society (STARS) at Ohio University, a program achieving international recognition with its peer-to-peer model of promoting equity and inclusion among the college student population. As a faculty member in the Ohio University Department of English in the 1970s, Dr. Williams taught courses in African American literature and literature by Black authors from across the diaspora. She designed and executed a Visiting Scholars program for that Department that brought noted authors of Color to the campus and made sure of their availability to the general Athens public. The knowledge of these various perspectives on the Black experience served to broaden her understanding and has fostered her ability to assist others in widening their perspectives. “Sheila encourages us to dig deeper into how history, culture, discrimination, bias, and micro-aggressions must proactively be addressed,” Janalee shared.

Dr. Williams is still going strong in her counseling practice and her community volunteerism. Her contributions to behavioral health in Athens County stretch over 45 years, a feat that speaks of resilience and passion for helping others.

On March 24, 2022, Dr. Williams received the award at Stuart’s Opera House during ACF’s A Celebration of Community . The Foundation also honored the other nominees for this year’s award: Jennifer Seifert and Molly Wales.

The mission of the Women’s Fund of the Athens County Foundation is to promote philanthropy among women and to establish a permanent fund that will provide funding to programs and projects in Athens County which empower women to achieve their full potential. Each year, the Women’s Fund awards grants to Athens County nonprofits that benefit women and girls.

John Glazer Impact Fund to Award $25k to Support Local Impact Businesses

The David A. Fidler Memorial Fund

The David A. Fidler Memorial fund was established to recognize a unique and generous individual.

In December of 1958, he married Joy V. Earth. They were together for 61 years and had four children and subsequently four grandchildren.

In the early 1960s, Tony agreed to establish a distribution network for Howard Rotavator in the U.S. based in Amarillo, Texas. In his work, Tony honed the ability to switch between the Queen’s English and Texan twang, a skill that enhanced his effectiveness in the boardroom and on farms and ranches across the American southwest. Tony’s success in “the States,” and Joy’s and Tony’s sense of the opportunities that America offered their children, led to the decision to stay in the United States permanently.

Tony’s career moved the family from Amarillo to Wisconsin, and back to Amarillo, as he transitioned from Howard Rotavator to an American enterprise, Connally Implement Supply Company (CISCO). In 1976, he moved to Kansas and continued to direct CISCO’s sales efforts in the United States, helping to lead its employees through some of the most difficult times American agriculture has experienced. After his children were grown and leading their own lives, his business acumen allowed him to explore new opportunities, and he worked for companies in Washington State, Illinois, and Ohio, where he eventually retired.

While he lived for most of his adult life in America and admired much about its people and places, Tony never lost his Britishness. He steadfastly maintained his accent and a quirky sense of British humor that managed to be both clever and silly at the same time. He was a loveable character and a person of generosity and integrity.

Tony visited family in Athens over many years and lived as part of this community from 2014-2017. He enjoyed walking at The Ridges, going to the Farmer’s Market, having lunch at the Village Bakery, and driving through the county’s beautiful scenery.

He died in December 2019 after bravely battling Alzheimer’s. The fund established in his name aims to honor the kindness, joy, and laughter that he spread throughout his life.

ACF Expands Response Fund to Address Racial Equity

The COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed urgency to address long-standing challenges in Athens County, including racial equity. In response, the Athens County Foundation (ACF) Board of Directors recently approved expanding Response Fund grants in support of projects that advance and promote racial equity in Athens County.

Initially launched to meet acute needs caused by the pandemic, ACF found that a flexible funding source such as the Response Fund can be deployed to meet other needs as well. “The Response Fund model encouraged us to think differently about how we support organizations,” shared Kerry Pigman, Executive Director. “While the annual grant cycle model is effective to fund a broad range of organizations and projects, adding a responsive approach allows us to support emergent and specific needs as well.”

Proposals to advance and support racial equity should either address specific project needs or focus on building long-term capacity for organizations or ongoing initiatives. Applicants are encouraged to contact ACF staff about their project prior to applying.

The Athens County Foundation is committed to a healthy, inclusive community, where there are opportunities for all people and recognizes the responsibility to intentionally reach out to segments of our population that have been historically marginalized. In 2018, community members formed the Racial Equity Coalition of Athens County, a collaborative space for those working to promote and advance racial equity. This spring, ACF brought the Art of Hosting training with a racial equity lens to Athens County to introduce members of our community to Art of Hosting techniques, while also aiming to advance ongoing racial equity conversations into actionable ideas. Expanding the Response Fund to include racial equity work provides funding support for ideas and projects that are emerging in the community, and to ones that have been historically overlooked.

Through the combined efforts of ACF, the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville, Rocky Community Improvement Fund, and Sisters Health Foundation, the Response Fund will continue considering funding needs prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. Additional funds for racial equity projects are made possible with funding from the Athens County Foundation. Those who are interested in donating to support these efforts can learn more and give online at athensfoundation.org .

Jane Cavarozzi joins the Athens County Foundation Board of Directors!

Jane Cavarozzi is the founder of Dirty Girl Coffee, LLC a social enterprise, located in Glouster Ohio. As a part of Dirty Girl Coffee’s social mission, Jane works to facilitate efforts with local businesses, developers, funding sources, and the like to influence revitalization, economic development, and the economic progress of women and vulnerable populations in her community. She is the board president and founding member of the Glouster Revitalization Organization, (GRO). GRO is a 501c3 founded in 2019 working on revitalization projects in Glouster Ohio.

Jane believes that with job expansion, community engagement, and economic diversity the economic standing of our most vulnerable community members can be improved. She works on projects that are intended to have a net effect of increased employment, small business growth, and neighborhood renewal. Jane has an extensive operational background including over 25 years in senior operations and organizational leadership roles. Jane resides in Glouster Ohio near Burr Oak, with her wife Kara Tripp. Jane enjoys roasting coffee, hiking the local trails, boating, and spending time with Kara and their 2 dogs.

Susan Urano Receives 2020 Cornwell Award

Susan Urano began working for the Athens Foundation in 2003 as Executive Director and retired from her position in May of 2019. However, she has been an instrumental part of navigating the organization through the recent pandemic as a part-time consultant. In recognition of her service to the Foundation, and the community, the Athens County Foundation is honoring her with the Cornwell Award.

Susan is a graduate from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts. Prior to her work at the Athens County Foundation, she was employed at the Dairy Barn as Executive Director. She is an author of The Community Table , which was published in 2018. Since retiring from her position at the Foundation, she started a consulting firm, V+U Strategies, and has returned to her roots as an artist.

Susan’s list of achievements includes establishing a no-rent lease agreement for the entire second floor of the Chase bank building which now houses the Foundation while they search for a permanent home. During Susan’s tenure with the Foundation, she structured a robust financial system, developed the successful Leadership Athens County program, developed many strategic corporate and community partnerships, and succeeded in creating many fundraising events, including Bounty on the Bricks which raised over $400,000 in four years to support our local food bank and food pantries. One of the endeavors for which Susan is most proud however is, “… being able to cultivate loyal donors who genuinely love Athens County and want to help those in need,” to which she quickly adds, “everything accomplished was through the strength of partnering with the community, and the help of qualified associates with whom I worked.” For example, Susan helped launch Leadership Athens County, a program now in its 15th year with over 300 graduates. Participants explore different components of Athens County including capitalizing on natural and cultural assets, cultivating a ready workforce, building critical infrastructure, exploring economic shifts and identifying opportunities, creating healthy communities, addressing racism and inclusion and developing community capacity. Many graduates have gone on to assume leadership roles in government, business, education and nonprofits. She proudly cites the 2007 partnership formed with the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville and the Sisters Health Foundation (former the Sisters of Saint Joseph Charitable Fund) which, launched the Access to Health Care for Athens County Senior Adults grant program. The initiative was established to expand impact to Athens County seniors, 50 years and over, through programs that address and improve access to health care.

In 2008 Susan championed the first Community Convening for all service providers working with children. This started a long, successful practice of inviting people into conversations that mattered to the community while constructing networks and finding solutions together.

The Foundation’s Women’s Fund was also launched during Susan’s tenure with the help of Susan Burgess, Kate Leeman, Susan Roth and Judy Millesen. The fund supports projects benefitting women and girls in Athens County. Last year, the advisory board established a Women’s Microloan Fund in partnership with the Sugarbush LLC and the Appalachian Growth Capital. In 2016, Susan guided the board to develop a Mission Related Investment Policy allowing assets to be invested in local companies for both economic and income benefits and income for the Foundation. The William Beale Legacy Fund established by the family of the late William Beale at the foundation made a significant investment in a local company. Through these initiatives, Susan raised the profile of the Athens Foundation and expanded its endowment assets 400%. The Athens County Foundation will give a $500 grant to Rising Suns Pharmacy in Susan’s honor.

The Athens County Foundation Foster B. Cornwell Awards are named in honor of local Attorney Foster B. Cornwell, a 4th generation Athenian, and his wife, Helen W. Cornwell. The Cornwells were instrumental in the growth of the Foundation and philanthropy in Athens County. Each year, the Foundation recognizes individuals with the same vision and dedication to the Athens County Community.

Jenny Stotts is Athens’ 2020 Woman of the Year

Jenny Stotts is a remarkable young professional who has positively impacted the youth of our community through the CASA/GAL program. She has been the Executive Director of the program since 2013 and prior to that, Jenny was a family services caseworker and sexual abuse investigator for 9 years. Her dedication to the CASA/GAL program became even more apparent in 2016 when she took on an additional role as the Regional Director of Southeast Ohio CASA, continuing to seek a brighter future for our part of Appalachia.

Jenny inspires those around her through her energy which leads to great team cohesion within her department. Her free spirit empowers others to think for themselves and from there creativity spreads. She has shown how her efforts have prevailed by increasing volunteer numbers by 300% since her start. With her hard work and dedication, she hopes to have a volunteer for every child that is being served by their CASA program.

Jenny’s passion for personal and organizational development makes her an integral member of our community. Through her love of personal development and organization Jenny is a staunch member of our community. She is a charter member of the Athens Sunrise Rotary and the District Chair of Membership for Rotary District 6690. She is a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and a member of the Child Conservation League as she continues to dedicate her time to helping children who are less fortunate in some aspect of their lives. Jenny has a B.S. degree in Social Work and a Master of Science degree from Ohio University. The Athens County Foundation and the Women’s Fund will give a $500 grant to Women for Recovery in honor of Jenny.

Other nominees for this year’s award were Jodi Mcneal & Jennifer Fritchley and Linda Strunk.

Nellia Underwood is 2020 Senior of the Year

The Athens County Foundation and the Athens Jaycees Senior Fund Advisory Board award the 2020 Senior of the Year award to Nellia Underwood for her volunteerism and commitment to service to the Athens County Community!

Nellia, an Athens resident of Malaysian-Filipino descent, has been living in the area for 27 years. During her time in Athens, she worked doing various types of jobs — from quilting, to sewing at a car manufacturing plant, to doing administrative work for businesses.

Volunteering is not new to Nellia. She and her late husband, David Underwood, were active volunteers of the American Red Cross in Athens. Upon David’s passing in 2015, she decided to continue volunteering in the community to help in every little way that she could. For the past five years, she volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Athens and Hocking County at the Corporation of Ohio Appalachian Development Inc. (COAD). In the RSVP office, she works the front desk, maintains files, and enters data. Nellia also serves on the RSVP advisory board and the annual senior recognition luncheon and program. But her dedication to Athens County extends beyond RSVP, and this has made a difference in Athens County for many people.

Nellia was one of the primary coordinators of the “Summer Feed” program in Amesville for children. She works with the Athens County Red Cross to coordinate the distribution of supplies through RSVP. Nellia also was instrumental in taking photos for the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs. And at the start of the pandemic, she made masks and distributed them to those who needed them in Athens County.

“Nellia is a very engaged and committed volunteer with RSVP. She pitches in on projects when asked, and she takes initiative to start new projects, too,” shared Mary Abel, RSVP Advisory Board member.

Her work also extends outside of Athens County. Nellia convenes the Filipino Community where she brings together Filipinos from Athens and other neighboring communities for various events such as the Annual International Street Fair at Ohio University, and their annual Christmas get-together. In 2013, Nellia and the rest of the Filipino community raised funds to help the survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The Athens County Foundation and the Athens Jaycees Senior Fund will donate a $500 grant to Nellia’s chosen cause, COAD’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

We will miss the twinkle in his eye as he brainstormed a good idea, his empathetic approach to helping others, and the way he brought out the best in everyone lucky enough to know him. National Standards is not mandatory. We chose to go above and beyond by affirming our commitment to excellence and accountability. Our accreditation provides assurance that we have sound policies and practices in place. In short, it means we meet the highest standards for local giving.

To receive accreditation with National Standards, we submitted our policies and procedures to a rigorous review of 26 National Standards in six key areas of community foundation operations, including donor services, investment management, grantmaking, and administration.

Athens County Foundation Extends Response Fund and Launches Fall Grant Program

Athens, OH, September 14 – These challenging times call for community connect ion and creative solutions. The Athens County Foundation (ACF) and partner organizations are responding by adapting grantmaking processes to best support nonprofits throughout Athens County.

In partnership with the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville, Rocky Community Improvement Fund, and Sisters Health Foundation, ACF is extending the Response Fund that began this spring. With increased demands on nonprofits due to the pandemic, these funding partners recognized that pooling funds and aligning the application process through ACF could further support nonprofits seeking funding.

“The strong demand for Response Fund grants to meet needs prompted by the pandemic made it clear the program needed to continue,” said Kerry Pigman, Executive Director of the Athens County Foundation. “But continuing the Response Fund require d additional funding from both ACF and our partners. I am grateful for these organizations, along with Athens County donors, have generously stepped up to address the continuing challenges agencies face due to COVID-19.” This partnership has enabled $175,000 in grants to 31 organizations since its inception in late March. Applications to the Respond Fund should address needs prompted by the coronavirus pandemic and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Susan Beaudry, Vice President of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville (OHFN) shared, “The Foundation’s commitment to supporting organizations serving vulnerable populations throughout Athens County will be further leveraged through this funding partnership. Working together, we can improve community health and quality of life in the region by supporting agencies making a difference in the lives of Athens County residents.”

The Rocky Community Improvement Fund (RCIF), an initiative of Rocky Brands in Nelsonville and supported through employee giving, will designate its fall 2020 funding to the ACF Response Fund. “Seeing the impact of the Response Fund here in Nelsonville and surrounding communities convinced RCIF to continue supporting these efforts. We know they are making a difference throughout the county,” said Stephen Crook, RCIF Chairperson.

“Our continued support of the Athens County Foundation’s Response Fund aligns with the Sisters Health Foundation’s vision of ‘healthy people in healthy communities,’” said Renee Steffen, Executive Director of the foundation that serves the Mid-Ohio Valley. “ We are grateful for the flexibility and creativity of Athens County nonprofits to meet comm unity needs during the pandemic .”

In addition to continuing the Response Fund, ACF is announcing the launch of its f all 2020 grant cycle , in partnership with OHFN .

For the f all 2020 Grant Cycle, applications will be considered that:

Proposal workshop sessions will be offered in September and October in an online format. These sessions will explain the proposal submission process and answer applicant’s questions. Dates and times for these sessions will be announced soon.

Building a Stronger Athens County: A Look at ACF’s Impact

The Athens County Foundation (ACF) isn’t just a grantmaking organization—it’s a catalyst for community-driven change. According to the Ripple Effect Mapping (REM) Assessment Report conducted by Ohio University's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs , ACF’s influence extends far beyond funding, helping to foster collaboration, leadership, and long-term solutions for local challenges.

Where ACF Makes a Difference

Making connections, mentoring, linking resources: ACF serves as a connector, linking nonprofits, businesses, and community members to tackle shared challenges. Whether it's increasing broadband access or supporting affordable senior housing, ACF ensures resources and efforts are aligned for maximum impact.
Developing leaders: Through programs like Leadership Athens County, ACF equips individuals with the skills and connections they need to step into leadership roles. Many graduates have gone on to launch community projects, serve on nonprofit boards, or lead local businesses.
Strengthening the nonprofit and philanthropic sector: In one year alone, ACF invested over $400,000 in 97 local organizations, helping them grow and sustain their missions. It also nurtures philanthropy by engaging young professionals through Athens Professionals for Philanthropy, making charitable giving more accessible and impactful.
Supporting Economic Development: ACF actively supports local entrepreneurs and businesses through mission-related investments. One standout example is its role in the Baileys Trails Project, a major outdoor recreation initiative that is set to boost tourism and local business opportunities.
Increasing the community's capacity to tackle tough issues: From supporting addiction recovery efforts to promoting racial equity conversations, ACF isn’t afraid to take on tough topics. By funding awareness campaigns and facilitating open dialogues, the foundation is helping the community find real solutions to real problems.

The Ripple Effect Mapping (REM) Report was conducted by evaluators from Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, who worked with ACF grantees, staff, donors, and community members to assess the foundation’s impact.

Kerry Pigman is ACF’s Next Executive Director

We are thrilled to announce that Kerry Pigman has been hired to be the next Executive Director of the Athens County Foundation!

After an extensive and rigorous search, the ACF Board of Directors selected Kerry to be the new Executive Director of the Foundation. Kerry began her training and leadership transition on April 1, working closely with outgoing Executive Director Susan Urano and the Board of Directors.

Kerry brings direct experience working with the Athens County Foundation, and more than 20 years of leadership experience focused on strategy and entrepreneurship. Kerry most recently worked as a strategy consultant to the Athens County Foundation and as an Executive in Residence with the Ohio University Voinovich School’s Social Enterprise Ecosystem Project. Kerry is an active community member who is passionate about creating, cultivating, and sustaining opportunities for Appalachian Ohioans. She was a board member for six years at the Athens County Foundation, serving as Board President from 2016-2018. She also served as a board member to the Athens Professionals for Philanthropy, Live Healthy Appalachia, and is currently an Ohio University Department of Management Advisory Board Member. Kerry has called Athens home for nearly 30 years and is thrilled to join the Athens County Foundation as Executive Director, building on its 40 years of support for Athens County, and Susan Urano’s thoughtful and impactful 20-year stewardship as Executive Director.

The Athens County Foundation Board of Directors has worked with Kerry for several years, and they are confident that Kerry’s talents, gifts, leadership skills, and experience will continue the Foundation’s success for the generations to come. Cheryl Sylvester, ACF Board President wrote:

Snowville Creamery Receives First Athen’s Area Women’s Business Fund Loan

The Athens Area Women’s Business Loan Fund (AWBLF) awards its first loan to Victoria Taylor, co-owner of Snowville Creamery. The loan will be used to purchase new packaging equipment for the local creamery’s yogurt products.

We are fortunate to have people in our region who care about the welfare of those who are involved in the economic well-being of our Appalachian communities.

Launched in 2018 through the collaboration between the Athens County Foundation, Appalachian Growth Capital, LLC, and Sugarbush Valley Impact Investments, the Athens Area Women’s Business Loan Fund (AWBLF) aims to provide financial support to new or expanding women-owned businesses in Athens County and other neighboring counties.

Women-owned businesses are more likely to have difficulty accessing credit to support their growth. The Women’s Loan Fund is designed to help fill in this gap and support opportunities for women to be financially successful. The fund can help small businesses that have a hard time qualifying for conventional financing due to bank concerns about credit history, collateral, business experience, or financial ratios. Funding from AWBLF can help with the purchase of equipment, machinery or inventory, start-up operating costs, working capital, and leasehold improvements.

On March 9, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency. As this emergency unfolds, it is hard to predict exactly where and when philanthropic interventions will be most effective. Yet we have been responding to community need for 40 years and will continue to be on the frontlines helping local nonprofits through this crisis.

We are talking with community leaders, foundations, and nonprofits and will continue to engage and convene stakeholders to assist in efforts to help those affected by this emergency. We stand ready to deploy our financial resources where they are most needed. As always we are a generous community that looks after our vulnerable neighbors and the nonprofits that support them.

If you are a nonprofit organization responding to the effects of the current crisis in Athens County and you’re seeking financial assistance, you may now apply to receive grants from our emergency response fund. We are prioritizing organizations delivering health and safety programs in Athens County. You may also qualify if your organization’s ability to operate has been hampered by the pandemic.

Baileys Trail System in our one big shot at economic transformation in Athens County and the region

The construction of the full 88 miles of the Baileys Trail System in the Wayne National Forest is our one big shot at transforming our ranking as the poorest county in Ohio. Our greatest asset in Athens County, after the people, is the beauty of our natural environment. From the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, we celebrate rock cliffs, rivers, lakes, trails, wildlife and wildflowers. Yet, we have not told the story of our rich resources much beyond our own knowing. The Bailey Mountain Bike Trails are designed to preserve the trees and resources in the Wayne as they meander around hills and valleys, over streams and boulders and through lush meadows. Bike enthusiasts will come seeking food, lodging, beverages and things to do with their families. They will return home with stories and “selfies” to share with friends and colleagues. And we believe, they will come from far away to ride the longest trail east of the Mississippi!

The trail, once complete, will attract not only over 200,000 visitors per year, it will give local business a huge boost, improve tax revenue and housing. Many, many partners have worked diligently, without conflict or power grabs, to see the goal of completing all 88 miles through. I know I won’t be able to name them all, but in addition to the Wayne National Forest, these groups are on the ground, working hard to make this dream happen: Ohio University, Hocking College, the City of Athens, Athens County, the Village of Chauncey, Town of Nelsonville, United States Department of Agriculture, Athens City-County Health Department, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program, Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau, National Forest Foundation, Department of Natural Resources, Athens Bicycle Club, Athens County Foundation, Rural Action, Appalachian Regional Commission, Local Business, and many more.

Why should we think about the future? For the people of Athens who wish to stay here and prosper. To preserve our beautiful environment. To boost our economy and tax base to provide needed services and infrastructure. To offer assets that would attract young talent to come here to work and live. And to attract visitors to stay in our hotels, eat our food and enjoy our wonderful county!

So what is our hesitation? Will we let our fear of scarcity allow us to fall into attrition, a state of stagnancy? Or will we embrace opportunity, a chance to celebrate our past while planning for the future, for our children and their children. Will we walk forward toward growth and abundance or shrink backward toward safety and stagnancy? Will we take a risk, for once, to benefit future generations?

Although I’ll never ride a mountain bike, I for one will take a step into the future and continue to work to see this one is a lifetime opportunity to fruition. And I will walk these beautiful trails!

The Community Table

The Athens County Foundation is launching a new initiative called The Community Table. Throughout the year, community members representing different backgrounds, neighborhoods and interest groups will join in conversations to connect and discuss the future of our community.

The Athens County Foundation believes inviting people into conversations that matter builds resilience as individuals and as a collective. And that the wisdom of the collective is what stewards real change. We have invited over 20 people in Athens to train in the Art of Hosting facilitation techniques and these people use their skills in their work and on behalf of the Foundation. This project is another tool in this work. The Foundation’s goals are to get people talking and to inform the work of the Foundation going forward.

The Community Table is designed to bolster understanding in these challenging times. By coming together around tables, everyone has the opportunity to talk, listen, and learn from each. Table hosts will provide the space for authentic human connection and civic engagement.

The Foundation is inviting people in Athens County who are interested in hosting a conversation to contact us. Your event can happen on any day and time that works for you and your guests in a space where everyone is comfortable. Food and drink can range from light snacks to full-course meals. The only requirement is that hosts provide productive environments for authentic conversations about the community.

Hosts will be asked to invite 8-12 people to participate and are encouraged to have a good mix of experiences and perspectives. This is a great chance to invite people who you may not spend much time with socially or do not know at all.

2019 Women of the Year

Karen Robinson and Anne Rubin were recently named the 2019 Women of the Year by the Women’s Fund of the Athens County Foundation.

Karen Robinson has been volunteering with Girl Scouts for over 20 years, co-leading her first troop when her daughter was in kindergarten in 1996. What started out as quality time with her daughter turned into relentless service to the women and girls in her community and abroad. She has been a confidant and role model for all these girls, far beyond the standard weekly meetings and scattered events usually expected of troop leaders. To this day she has led 5 different groups of girls; Troop 1367, Troop 5865, Troop 1367 Part 2, and Troop 5865 Parts who are currently 1st graders, and a Travel Patrol! She’s given these girls so many opportunities including vast travel experience to Mexico, Switzerland, Chicago, Washington D.C., Savannah, and more. Karen does many behind the scenes task such as creating logos for tee-shirts, developing a database to store information for badges earned and summer camp. She has spearheaded many fundraisers as well as planned many events, camps and trips.

Born and raised in Athens County, Karen Robinson has been a Representative Payee for Hopewell Health Centers since 2001. Volunteering with Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council for the past twenty three years, one of her joys has been to see many of her scouts grow and become successful adults. Karen has served as a troop leader, Membership Advisor, and Treasurer for the Adena Service Unit, as well as a mentor to other leaders within Athens Area Girl Scouts. Scouting has been a passion of Karen’s and she has helped create opportunities for hundreds of girls over the years.

When Anne Rubin began practicing in Athens, there were only a handful of woman attorneys in the region. Throughout Anne’s career, for over 35 years, she has represented low-income victims of domestic violence in Athens County in a variety of family law matters. She has also represented woman and children in healthcare and benefits matters, helping insure they receive medical treatment and public benefits they are entitled to under law. She has kept woman housed through challenging evictions and other housing law matters. She has assisted pregnant women in asking for accommodations from their employers. Anne became the managing attorney of the Athens SEOLS office in 2002.

Not only has Anne represented individual woman in cases in the Athens Area for over 35 years, she has also advanced impact litigation to change circumstances for all woman in the area. For example, Anne represented a mother in the Court of Appeals where the trial court had denied her custody based on her “social practices” even though the father was physical abusive to her and she had been the primary caretaker for the child’s life. Anne was successful, the mother retained custody, and the court established rule minimizing the court’s ability consider social practices if they do not have a detrimental effect on the child.

Anne Sessums Rubin is Managing Attorney of Southeastern Ohio Legal Services’ Athens office. Anne began working at SEOLS as a law clerk when it opened its Athens office in 1980 and has worked in the Athens office since then. Presently, she manages daily operations of the civil legal aid office serving seven counties, including Athens. She has a robust general poverty law practice representing low income persons in state and federal administrative and court proceedings. Anne served on the Board of Directors of IPAC (Integrating Professionals for Appalachian Children), a regional non-profit rural health network, and has been on the Hocking-Athens-Perry Community Action Agency board of directors since 2002. Anne has a B.S. degree in Social Work from Ohio University and obtained her J.D. at Ohio State University.

Other nominees for this year’s award were: Amy King, Andrea Reik, Kari Gunter-Seymour, Molly Wales, Skye Hope, Teresa Curtiss, Tessa Evanosky.

The mission of the Women’s Fund of The Athens County Foundation is to promote philanthropy among women, and to establish a permanent fund which will provide funding to programs and projects in Athens County which empower women to achieve their full potential. Each year the Women’s Fund awards grants to Athens County non-profits which benefit women and girls. The 2019 recipients are:

Mary Elizabeth Lasher Barnette Women’s Leadership Scholarship Fund

The Mary Elizabeth Lasher Barnette Women’s Leadership Scholarship Fund was established by the daughters of Mary Elizabeth Lasher Barnette to honor their mother’s leadership and devotion to the journalism profession and to Ohio University.

The daughter of Elizabeth Siddons and George Starr Lasher, Mrs. Barnette grew up in Athens. She became the first woman editor of the O.U. Post student newspaper in 1941 before graduating with a journalism degree in 1942. She broke professional barriers in New York City, becoming the first female reporter and columnist to work for Editor and Publisher, a trade journal for the newspaper industry. Later in her career, she worked as a reporter, weekly newspaper editor, and public relations executive in the Buffalo, New York area. Mrs. Barnette devoted her retirement years between 1989 and 2007 in Athens, Ohio to building scholarship opportunities for students at both the collegiate and high school levels.

This fund will support the education of women leaders in the field of journalism who will make lasting contributions to their profession and deliver quality journalism to the public.

Sam Jones receives Cornwell Award Honor

The Athens Foundation Foster B. Cornwell Awards are named for the local attorney who was instrumental in the growth of the Foundation and philanthropy in Athens County.

We are honored to recognize Sam Jones for his work in Glouster and Trimble to promote philanthropy and the welfare of people living there. We recognize your vision and hard work and thank you for what you give back.

Sam Jones

Sam was born and raised in the Trimble Township area. He has operated an athletic club for the youth for nearly 60 years. He was instrumental in the organization of the Trimble Township Little League programs and for several years coached little league football, baseball and basketball. He also coached Jr. High football for the Trimble schools.

Sam and his wife organized the Southeastern Ohio Golden Gloves Boxing Tournaments, which were held for 10 years in the area and brought much revenue to the Trimble Schools. He personally participated in professional boxing shows in which proceeds (nearly $8,000) went to the Trimble School System.

Sam is a former 3-time United States heavyweight Bando Kickboxing Champion and competed in Madison Square Garden in New York City, which was shown on ABC TV’s Wide World of Sports in 1975.

Sam was inducted to the Bando Kickboxing Hall of Fame held in Washington, DC on May 29, 1993. He was chosen by a national vote of his peers. He is an 8th degree black belt in the Bando system.

In 1995 he coached the United States professional kickboxing team against Russia in an event held in New Orleans.

Sam was the boxing coach at Ohio University for 20 years.

Sam has received many, many awards and as the Athens News wrote: one of Athens County’s “Most Beloved People.”

Sam was a former employee of the Buckeye Pipeline (Ohio Oil Gathering, Co.), an ironworker, owned and operated a men’s and woman’s clothing store and a tavern in Glouster, until his retirement in 1999.

Sam is currently a member of the Trimble Local Textbook and Supplies Foundation and the Trimble Local Wall of Fame committee. He is a past member of the Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous Board, the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee of the Community Bank, the United Bank Corporation for the Citizens Bank, Board of Public Affairs, and the Advisory Committee to the First National Bank of Nelsonville.

Sam and his wife, Ellen are the parents of 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

2016 Athens County Report Published

The Athens Foundation published their 2016 Athens County report on the state of Athens County. Originally commissioned in 2010, this snapshot informed much of the Foundation’s work, as well as, that of other nonprofits, churches, and governments in Athens County. This report is an attempt to look at our community today, and will also inform and direct the work of the Foundation for the next five years. The Athens Foundation produced this report in collaboration with Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs and the School of Visual Communication.

Several key findings in the areas of economic vitality, thriving communities, and individual health & wellbeing are discussed in the report. The Athens Foundation invites the community to strategically invest to create meaningful and measurable results that make a real difference in our community. Through this work the Foundation will align partners to accelerate results.
