What is The Athens Foundation? The Athens Foundation is a community foundation conceived and supported by Athenians. In 1980 eight civic-spirited Athens women gave fifty dollars each to launch the Athens Foundation. The Foundation's endowment currently stands at over three million dollars, and the community philanthropy has granted over one million dollars to 140 Athens area groups having a great impact on the quality of life in Athens County. 
What does the Foundation do? The Athens Foundation enhances the quality of life for the people of our region through building endowments, awarding grants, and providing leadership on key community issues now and for generations to come.
What does the Athens Foundation fund? This year's deadlines are March 15, 2011 from organizations addressing Environmental, Recreation and Arts, Humanities and Education issues and September 15 for Animal Welfare, Healthcare, Mental Health and Human Services organizations.
The Athens Foundation is comprised of over 20 different funds including the Craig Copeland Fund, the Claire Ping Fund, Mary Carolyn Clutter Fund, the Howard Walton Fund, the Athens Bar Association Fund, The Women's Fund and the Athens Distaster Relief Fund. The Foundation continually seeks to expand support available for the Athens County communities through the Foundation.
Who administers the Foundation? A volunteer board of 16 members, serving four-year terms, meets at least six times per year to oversee the foundation. Executive Director Susan Urano manages the operation of the Foundation.
