2007 Access to Health Care for Athens County Senior Adults program makes grant recommendations
The Athens Foundation, along with the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville and the Sisters of Saint Joseph Charitable Fund, announced recommendations for its 2007 Access to Health Care for Athens County Senior Adults grant program at its annual meeting Tuesday, October 23 at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville. Seventy-five thousand dollars in grants were awarded to the Appalachian Community Visiting Nurse Association, ATCO, Inc., Ohio University Free Clinics and Athens City-County Health Department.

The Appalachian Community Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice & Health Services Inc. received $20,000 to provide hospice services to patients in three skilled nursing facilities and one assisted living facility in Athens County. Dr. Tracy Marx will utilize funds to conduct end-of-life training for 26 nurses, develop clinical hospice rotation for medical students and attend the Center to Advance Palliative Care Training.

ATCO, Inc. received $20,000 to provide training and resources for staff members to continue the Healthy Senior Program. ATCO will partner with WellWorks and the Athens Area Mediation Center to address issues regarding physical and nutritional well-being, along with ways for families to prepare seniors with mental retardation and developmental disabilities for their senior years.

Another $20,000 grant went to the Ohio University Free Clinic for Rural Elder Outreach targeting those 60 and older in surrounding communities who require glucose, cholesterol, hearing and blood pressure checks. The clinic aims to have professional staff on site to assist these individuals. The grant will also provide funding for transportation for follow-up care as well as educational materials.

The Athens City-County Health Department has received a $15,000 grant to implement the Medical Reserve Corps Senior Outreach Program. Funds will be used to hire a full-time VISTA employee and to publish printed materials regarding emergency preparedness.
