Foster B.Cornwell Awards Presented to Three for Outstanding Community Service
Gary North, Jody Abdella and Chase Bank were presented with the Foster B. Cornwell Award for Community Service at the annual meeting of The Athens Foundation October 23, 2007 at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville.
Jody Abdella has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the 1,067 residents of Chauncy. A little over a year ago, she formed the Chauncey Community Improvement Committee to influence the environment in her hometown and encourage all citizens to take a genuine interest in helping create a clean, friendly, safe community to call home. This past year she helped to plan clean up days, children's activities, village dinners, raffles and a holiday celebration which gave every child a gift. The committee assisted village council in hiring a police chief and raised money for the police department. This year they replaced street signs and worked to upgrade the library.
Chase Bank has been involved in several community projects to benefit youth in Athens County. The Bank announced a major sponsorship of Kids on Campus, a program giving low-income children the opportunity to participate in after-school programs to better themselves academically and socially. They have worked for over twenty years collecting Coats for Kids and donating the garments to local school children. For the past two years, Chase Bank has provided office space to the Athens Foundation.
Gary North, outgoing president of the Athens Foundation Board was honored for outstanding leadership in the community and the Foundation. North was a key supporter of the new Leadership Athens program. His leadership skills contributed to the surge in growth and activities at the Athens Foundation. Gary has worked tirelessly on the Athens Retirement Center Project as well.
Following the presentation of awards, new members of the board were elected: Michael Carpenter, Florence Clarke Riffe and Judith Millesen
