2009 Foster B. Cornwell Awards Announced
Three Named for Foster B. Cornwell Award by The Athens Foundation
Frederick Oremus, Leslie Schaller and Carol Kuhre will receive the Foster B. Cornwell Award for philanthropy and community service at the annual meeting of The Athens Foundation on December 8, 2009 at Baker Center Ballroom on the Ohio University Campus.
The Athens Foundation Foster B. Cornell Awards are named for the local attorney who was instrumental in the growth of the Foundation and philanthropy in Athens County. His bold gifts to six local organizations demonstrate his vision and care in providing for many generations to come. Each year we recognize individuals with similar vision and dedication to the Athens County Community.
Frederick Oremus is being recognized for his work to promote philanthropy in the Appalachian region. He was instrumental in the growth of Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville and has served as Chair of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville for the past ten year. Oremus, who has worked as an attorney in Athens County for over 30 years, has served on many boards throughout his career. He is a respected counselor to many in the area.
Leslie Schaller, founder of the Food Ventures Program at ACENET, is being honored for her work in local food infrastructure. She has worked on public policy that enables farmers and food producers to receive entrepreneurial support, resources and capital they need to access markets and improve sales/equity.


Since 1985 she has served as the Business Director of the Worker-Owned Restaurant Corporation that operates Casa Nueva and Cantina and Casa Manufacturing in Athens, Ohio. Ms. Schaller currently serves as an appointee to the Governor’s Ohio Food Policy Council, the Ohio Department of Agriculture Market Connections Task Force and an USDA Agricultural Marketing Services Advisory Board on Farmers Markets. She also serves on a number of Boards: the national Farmers Market Coalition’s Board as Treasurer, as Board past-president for the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and chairs the Athens Municipal Arts Commission.
Carol Kuhre is being honored for her work in philanthropy in Athens County, Appalachia Ohio and throughout the nation. Carol co-founded the Appalachian Ohio Public Interest Campaign (AOPIC) and was integral in its transformation into Rural Action in 1991. Carol acted as Rural Action’s executive director for 15 years. During her tenure, she raised nearly ten million dollars to improve the environment in the Ohio Appalachian region.
She was the co-director at United Campus Ministries for 12 years, and currently is president of the Athens Foundation and vice chair of the Jesse Smith Noyes Foundation. She co-founded the Athens Coalition against World Hunger, the Appalachian Peace and Justice Network, Students for Peace and Feminism and Faith Partners. She is also an accomplished fiber artist.
The Athens Foundation will make a grant of $250 each to the Rural Action, Stuart’s Opera House and ACENET in honor of the award winners. The Foundation is a community foundation conceived and supported by Athenians. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for the people of our region through building endowments, awarding grant and providing leadership on key community issues now and for generations to come. Started in 1980 with $50 donations from Claire Ping and seven other local women, the Foundation’s endowment stood at over three million dollars in 2008 and since inception over one million dollars has been given out to local organizations.
