Rebecca Dale Donates $100,000 to Athens Foundation
Rebecca Dale grew up on a small, struggling farm near Youngstown, Ohio until the 50s. Without television or movies or trips to town, she said she must have felt isolated, yet her life felt full with outdoor play, healthy food, and an overall sense that life was good. She felt very rich. Until Rebecca went to school, she did not know that she was not!

Rebecca was a latecomer to higher education; she went to nursing school in her 30s, to Youngstown State University for a degree in English in her 40s, then to Kent State University for a Masters in Library Science. After retiring from Youngstown Public Library, she received a graduate certificate in Earth Literacy from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and training in Permaculture. Besides being a mom, she has worked as a farmer, a nurse, librarian, and free-lance writing for her local paper.

Rebecca's grandfather Carl Knittel influenced her charitable interests by being a man who knew the joy of giving. His salary as an electrical engineer in the early days of trolley cars was modest, yet allowed him not only to provide his family with a comfortable home, but also to give of his time and money wherever he was able to help. Rebecca's present charitable interests include the American Friends Service Committee and the Ohio Nature Conservancy. She lives in the cooperative, intentional community called Currents and spends as much time as possible walking in their woods. She enjoys home food production, and is now working on a house rehab project.

When asked why she has chose the Athens Foundation to carry out her charitable goal she answered, "I have fallen in love with the Athens area, I see its needs, and want to invest in the place I now call home." The Rebecca Dale Fund has been established at the Athens Foundation to support the work of the Center for the Creation of Cooperation.
