Mary Carolyn Clutter Bequest
Mary Carolyn Clutter passed away on February 1, 2009, but her generosity lives on through her generous bequest to the Athens community. She was born on November 19, 1915, at Mapleview Farm in Waterloo Township, the daughter of Robert L. and Amanda Cooper Clutter. She was a 1932 graduate of Athens High School and earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Ohio University. She was a teacher at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphanage in Xenia for ten years. She retired as an administrative associate of the Graduate College, Ohio University in 1972.

Carolyn was a member of her ancestral church, Alexander Presbyterian, where she served as an organist, director of choirs, elder, clerk of the session and deacon. In 1976, she transferred her membership to Athens First Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon and member of the chancel choir. Throughout the years, she was active in Presbytery work. At Ohio University, she was a member of Kappa Phi and Kappa Delta Pi, and was a patroness of Sigma Alpha lota. Also, she was a member of the Trustees Academy.

Throughout her life, she attended recitals, concerts and operas far and wide. She traveled all over the United States and Canada and made a half- dozen European trips, mostly focused on musical events. Carolyn volunteered at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Athens County Food Pantry, and Appalachian Health Care and Visiting Nurses.

The Mary Carolyn Clutter Fund was established with the $48,000 bequest left to the Athens Foundation for the purpose of adding to the permanent endowment.
