FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
$50,000 GRANT TO TRIMBLE LOCAL SCHOOLS ANNOUNCED BY ATHENS FOUNDATION, OSTEOPATHIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION OF NELSONVILLE, SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH CHARITABLE FUND AND THE OHIO CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION
On June 11, the board of directors of the Athens Foundation in partnership with the Children's Foundation of Ohio, the Sisters of St. Joseph Charitable Fund and the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville presented $50,000 to Trimble Local Schools to support the work of BridgeBuilders after school program. The grant is the result of an 18 month review of the needs of Athens County children which began with the first-ever forum of children's services specialists countywide held on Wednesday December 12, 2007 at the Athens Public Library on Home Street.
Trimble Local schools have documented a growing risk for Middle School youth in their community. Bridgebuilders, a community based initiative is seeking to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs amongst adolescents, have a mission to raise these children out of a future overshadowed with danger.
The program will fund the hiring of a full-time Activity Coordinator to develop a comprehensive activity curriculum, create leadership and a plan to further sustain operations after grant funding is over. Also, there will be a focus on the importance of proper nutrition and adequate exercise in the programs. Overall, the goal is to promote positive lifestyles while avoiding dependence on alcohol, drugs, or tobacco.
After the program is put into action an estimated eighty percent of middle school children will have participated in a structured after school activity by the end of the 2009/10 school year. Also, by the end of the 2009/10 school year a plan will be developed and documented to implement structured after school activities for high school students. Finally, new and existing programs will be evaluated for effectiveness utilizing evidence based methodology when possible.
Helping area youth is the theme that brings all of these organizations together. The program will enable youth to have a voice, learn to express themselves, assess their assets and determine next steps. Kathy Trace, a Bridgebuilder founder says that "Empowering youth is the first step for them to begin embracing positive lifestyle."
The next deadline for grants addressing social service, health, civic improvement and animal welfare is September 15, 2009. Guidelines and applications can be found on the Foundation website at www.athensfoundation.org. Contact the office at 740-594-6061 for information.
