In November of 1980 with the generosity of eight Athens women, led by Claire Ping, a non-profit organization dedicated to bettering the community was created. Each woman contributed fifty dollars which was placed into an endowment fund and left to grow. In 1986, only a few short years later, the donations had matured and the Foundation began awarding grants to tax exempt organizations devoted to bettering the lives of Athens and the families who love it.
In 1986 the endowment was large enough that the Foundation could begin awarding grants to activities, services and organizations with projects benefiting Athens. In the past 19 years it has given over 350 grants totaling more than $500,000.
Member donations have been the largest source of the Foundation's endowment, but in the mid-1990s bequests from the estates of Helen Dinsmoor, Evelyn Luchs and Constance Sands added significantly to the endowment. In 1998, proceeds from the sale of a house given to the Foundation added another large sum.
In 1999, the Foundation received a bequest from the Foster Cornwell estate totaling over one million dollars. In September 1999, a bequest of $25,000 from the estate of Florence V. and Hunter Hooe was announced.
The Hocking Valley Bank established a donor advised fund with the Foundation.
The Foundation's Access to Health Care for Seniors initiative lauched.
The Athens Foundation's total endowment currently stands at over three million dollars. Over the
years The Foundation has awarded over one million dollars to more than 140 Athenian groups striving
to make the lives of Athenians the best that they can be.
