The Athens Foundation through the Years
In November 1980 the generosity of eight Athenian women sparked the creation of an organization
dedicated to bettering the lives of the citizens in Athens County. In no time the small, yet consequential,
contributions of fifty dollars each grew.
In 1986 The Athens Foundation began awarding grants to
activities, services, and organizations devoted to enhancing the lives of Athens citizens.
By the 1990s the largest source of endowment shifted to solely member donations. Helen Dinsmoor, Evelyn Luchs, and Constance Sands helped The Foundation reach new heights when they bestowed their
estates upon the appreciative group.
These women's selfless donations created a trend in the contribution of estates to The Athens
Foundation.
In 1999 Foster Cornwell's estate, worth a total of one million dollars, was given to
assist in the organization's endeavors. In that same year 25,000 dollars was willed to The Foundation through the estate of Florence V. and Hunter Hooe.
In 2007 The Foundation's Access to Health Care for Seniors initiative lauched.
The Athens Foundation's total endowment currently stands at over three million dollars. Over the
years The Foundation has awarded over one million dollars to more than 140 Athenian groups striving
to make the lives of Athenians the best that they can be.
