Sixteen Spring Grants Announced by Athens Foundation
On June 11, the board of directors of the Athens Foundation presented $34,980 in grant awards to 16 local tax exempt organizations at its Spring Luncheon. Awards included: West Elementary School PTO, $2,500 for Primary Playground Renewal; Village Productions Performing Arts Inc., $1,550 for Educational Capacity Building; Tri-County Career Center, $1,300 to support Using Young Adult Novels to Promote Content Area Learning; The Dairy Barn, $2,000 for Communication System Upgrade; The Appalachian Peace & Justice Network, $1,700 for Violence Prevention Classes at Amesville Elementary; Rural Action- Sunday Creek Watershed Group, $1,800 for Sunday Creek Watershed Group's Environmental Learning Program; Ohio University Kids on Campus, $2,150 for 2009 Kids on Campus Summer Woodworking Workshop; Kilvert Community Center, $2,200 for Upgrade to Storage Structure; Havar, Inc., $2,650 for Summer Fun for Kids; Chauncey Elementary School, $1,580 for Get Fit Jogging Club; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Athens, Inc., $3,950 for Youth Mentoring Youth Program; Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center, $2,300 for Bringing Arts and Diversity Through Guest Education; Athens Photographic Project, $2,950 for Athens Photographic Project; Athens Conservancy, $2,200 for Trace Trail Improvements; ARTS/West (City of Athens), $1,050 for Writing Workshops at HVCRC and Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative, $3,100 for Sustainable Staple Food Production.

The Athens Foundation is a community foundation conceived and supported by Athenians. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for the people of our region through building endowments, awarding grant and providing leadership on key community issues now and for generations to come. Started in 1980 with $50 donations from Claire Ping and seven other local women, the Foundation's endowment stood at over three million dollars in 2008 and since inception over one million dollars has been given out to local organizations.
