What is the Athens Foundation?
The Athens Foundation is a community foundation conceived and supported by Athenians. In 1980 eight civic-spirited Athens women gave fifty dollars each to launch the Athens Foundation. In 2007 the Foundation's endowment stood at over three million dollars, and the community philanthropy has granted nearly one million dollars to 140 Athens area groups.positive impact on the quality of life in Athens.
What does the Foundation do?
The Athens Foundation enhances the quality of life for the people of our region through building endowments, awarding grants, and providing leadership on key community issues now and for generations to come.
What does the Athens Foundation fund?
This year's deadlines are March 15, 2008 from organizations addressing Environmental, Public Affairs, Recreation and Arts and Humanities issues and September 15 for Education, Healthcare, Mental Health and Human Services organizations. Funds within the Foundation include: the Bobbie Britton Fund, the Howard Walton Fund, the Special Education Parent Advocacy Network (SEPAN) Fund; the Athens Bar Association Fund, the Thomas and Barbara Kostorhyz Fund, The Dr. Bruce Paxton Fund, The Women's Fund and the Hocking Valley Bank Fund for the Community. One goal of the Foundation is to expand the number of funds available to the community through the Foundation.
Who administers the Foundation?
A volunteer board of 16 members, serving four-year terms, meets at least six months per year to oversee the foundation. Executive Director Susan Urano manages the operation of the Foundation.
